I have a Peavey Session 400 Limited and I'm wanting to run it thru our sound system. I know that I will need a direct box to do that. My question is, do I come out of the back of the amp from the Balanced Line out or come out of the Preamp out/Power Amp In inputs? Thanks in advance for the help and I'm a newbie to the forum.

Peavey made a neat little box some years ago to do just that.
It was placed after the amp and before the speaker. You could still hear the amp and there was another cable going to the mixer board.

The Peavey EDI direct box works very well, but we replaced it with the MSDI(microphone simulated interface).

Can you recommend a direct box to get. I'm looking at a EDB1 or IMP2 both made by Whirlwind from Sweetwater Music Supplies.

Just wondering: Why don't you use the balanced out on the back of the amp? I believe that this is what it's for. This seems like this would be what you want and eliminate the need for a direct box.

One word of caution about direct boxes: They are not all created equal. If you want to use one between the amp and speaker, make absolutely sure that the one that you get is designed for that. Some are made for instrument levels, which is a much smaller signal.

I tried that and it didn't work. That the reason I thought that I needed a direct box.

If the line out isn't working, it's not that you need a toy, you need it fixed. If you're near Meridian, just have Peavey do it.

Lamar: When you say that the DI out did not work, what do you mean?
Was it totally dead, with no signal?
Or was it weak and/or just did not sound good?

And a question for the amp experts about this amp:
Is this interface truly a balanced signal, or is it single ended?
Does it have enough ooomphh to drive a long mic cable to a mixer?
I can't seem to find much information or a schematic on the internet for this amp.

ajm I plugged a mic cable into the balance line output and run to the stage plug. When it was all plugged in, there was a ground hum that you could hear thru the house speakers and you could flip the ground switch on the front of amp and it didn't effect the hum.

Lamar just a quick question. Was the house system and your 400 on the same power line? If the amp is getting power from one source and the sound system from another it can cause hum. Sometimes it is caused by each unit in question on separate legs of the breaker box. Switching the ground switch won't fix this. An alternative would be to mike the amp.

I think that's going to be my best bet. Thanks for the info.

The Session 400 doesn't have a balance out. The Booster Output jack(12) on the back is a resistor divider from the power amplifier out with a 1 volt RMS output into at least 10K ohms. It is a unbalance output. That why you had hum. If you connect a direct box for line levels, one with a attenuator, input to the Boost jack and connect the microphone cable to the direct box balance output it should work.

I think the 400 Limited has a balanced line out. That's the amp from the 90s.

From an internet search for "Peavey Session 400 LTD" I found a manual with this:

Balanced Line Out:
Load Impedance: 600 ohms or greater
Nominal Output: -10 dBv, 0.3 V RMS
Maximum Output: +lO dBv, 3 V RMS
(XLR male connector, transformer driven;
special equalization circuitry employed)

So it would appear to be the real deal.

But I have an old Carvin X amp from the 80's. It also has a line out, and it uses an XLR connector. However, electronically it is a single ended signal.

Yup. Lane & ajm your right the Session 400 Limited does have a balanced output. It looks to be a variation on the Nashville 400. Never heard of it before now.
