I've been toying with getting a MIDI setup to use on my regular guitar, my bass, and hopefully my steel guitar.
I had been seriously looking at the Roland GR-55, but it kind of gets out of control with multiple hex pickups....
I have been using Apple Mainstage for a while with BIAS FX, so I already had them. I bought the full version of MIDI Guitar and spent a few hours figuring out how to get it to work with Mainstage (The website instructions are for Logic, which is kind of like Mainstage, but juuuuust different enough).
Anyway, I got it to work yesterday and after playing tons of the built-in MIDI instruments (who doesn't want to make their guitar sound like pan pipes or steel drums?) on my regular guitar, I decided to plug in the pedal steel.
Well, it worked pretty well. It tracked pretty well, and even tracked the pedals and levers pretty well (depending on the MIDI Instrument).
Is it perfect? no, but I'm not sure anything in this world is perfect. Would it work for the one or two songs I'd like to have strings, or a piano (the soul organ sounds are really cool) in with my guitars? yes.
If anyone has tried it, or needs help, let me know. I think its pretty cool. The overall investment (I already had the laptop) was less than one GK pickup. And I can use it with all of my instruments.
I'll try and post a video later this week (crazy work week) so you can see and hear it in action, both on the regular and the pedal steel.
