Mike Neer has a released a new CD this week; entitled "Steelonious" , it features straight steel arrangements of Jazz great Thelonious Monk. Accompanied by a tasteful ensemble comprised of piano and a rhythm section with some vibraphone for good measure, this album is a listening treasure. Whether you are a fan of straight steel(no pedals), jazz, or steel guitar of any sort, you should find this CD highly entertaining and a joy to listen to. Job well done Mike!!!

My copy showed up Friday and its been in my player since...great record, great playing and one of the best steel records sonically I've heard in a while!

This is the first time I stopped and listened to some cuts Mike and they are excellent. I haven't listened to any Monk in decades and and your interpretations are kikass thx for this album.  |

What a great idea, doing an all Monk album. Mike sails up the river into the heart of jazz, and nails it. The beauty of Thelonious Monk is that he had so many interesting melodies, that you don't have to be a be-bopper to appreciate them. I wouldn't necessarily call Mike a jazz player, but I love what he does on these tunes.
If anybody has heard any of the albums by TJ Kirk with Charlie Hunter (who played tunes by T-Thelonious, J-James Brown and Kirk-Roland Kirk and sometimes mixed them together), you'll especially appreciate what Mike has done on this album.
I urge anyone who likes to hear the steel in different settings to check this album out.

After listening to the snippets on the internet, I couldn't resist. The CD arrived yesterday, and it's a masterpiece! Really beautiful. Nice to hear it on the big speakers instead of the computer, too.
I might have to add a couple of these tunes to Wine Country Swing's repertoire. I'd never thought of Monk's music for the steel before. This gives me a fresh view.

Thanks for all the kind words. I feel like we left everything on the field, so to speak. I couldn't be happier with the way the record turned out, and the reception has been great. I'm still hoping that a few more publications like Downbeat, Guitar Player and Jazz Times get around to reviewing it.
I have the next 3 or 4 CDs already planned out, and they are going to be great if they ever materialize. I learned a lot from this process.

As primarily a jazz lover myself, this is really the ONLY steel guitar recording I can remember hearing that I can truly imagine hearing on a jazz radio station! Not that there isn't some great jazz steel playing on recordings, but there's something different about Mike's CD that I feel can really reach the (sometimes snobby and opinionated) jazz audience. (even though I know he says it wasn't his intention to make a "JAZZ" record...)

As part of the sometimes snobby and opinionated jazz audience (actually, in my case it would be always snobby and opinionated), I think one of the appealing things about the cd is that the band sounds like they are really into it. Sometimes 'jazz steel' rhythm sections sound like country session players phoning it in.
I just got a copy recently (took a while, it seems to have been back-ordered) and very much enjoyed it. |

My copy came the day before Christmas, and I kept it in the car cd player all weekend. Really amazing work, great jazz, great band.

Thank you for your comments. I'm so glad you dig the record.
I've been pretty busy getting this together for some live shows and also demoing some stuff for the next record (I've got another 4 or 5 CDs planned).
