I've just started learning a couple of Hawaiian tunes on the B 11th tuning. I'm sure many already know that it is very close to the A 6th tuning, especially on a six string lap steel. Can anybody suggest some Gospel songs that would be good on B 11th?

Just a note about Jules Ah See's B11 - it's a B7 on the 3 bottom strings (5 bottom on an 8 string) and an A6 on the top. So, if you play a C (3 frets up) on top, you get a C7 at the 1st fret. Jerry Byrd's B11 has, from the top, E C# A F# D# C # (A, B), while Jules' has E C# A F# D# B (F# B), where the parens are for an 8 string. Jerry liked to have more of the A sound.

George,
Are you learning "Sand".?
I tabbed that song out for E9th but that tuning doesn't do it justice, it was made for B11th. Very Happy

Erv, Right now I'm learning "Mapuana". Sand will be next. I have tabs and CDs from Doug Beaumier for C6th, A6th and 3 songs for the B 11th tuning on 6 or 8 string lap steels.

Who was best known for B11 in Hawaiian Steel? Curious if there is an album or artist you could point me to. Thank you.

Jules Ah See, IMHO. But Jerry Byrd played in his B11 tuning. Alan Akaka, Isaac Akuna, Jeff Au Hoy use Jules' tuning, as well. Of course, so do I, for "Sand", "Mapuana", "Hana", and "How'd Ya Do". Jules and Barney Isaacs recorded an LP titled "Barney and Jules". Jules died back in the 60's, so the LP is old. Check out Jerry's version od "Sand" on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=jerry+byrd+sand. Also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C-CZpK7lNU.
