I need one or more of you Hawaiian "buffs" to give me the "C13th" tuning that a lot of the Hawaiians use. Is it?
E
C
A
G
E
C
Bb
C
For some reason that does not look right to me. I used to know it, but my brain has a mental block when it comes to it. So PLEASE correct me if that is not it. And give me the correct tuning like Alan Akaka and others use.
Also, I have a running debate concerning the 8 string "B11th" tuning. Could you also tell me how it is spelt. I remember JB's 6 string tuning as:
E
C#
A
F#
D#
B
But I want the 8 string tuning.
Someone?

Andy,
I can't thank you enough for this info. JUST exactly what I have been looking for.
It is interesting also the slight difference between the "Hawaiian" E13th tunings and the "western swing" E13th. Western Swingers had a middle E in the tuning if my memory serves me correctly.
Again thank you soo much,

CARL,YOU HAVE THE C-13th TUNING RIGHT.YOU ALSO HAVE THE 1st 6 STRINGS OF THE B-11th,THE 7th STRING IS F# AND THE 8th STRING IS B.SOMETIMES THEY TUNE THE 7th STRING UP TO A WHICH WOULD GIVE IT A 7th IN THE LOW END.DROP ME AN E-MAIL SOMETIME AT HAWAIIANPEDALS@AOL.COM |

Carl- I had that tuning that John Ely has listed. But I left out the Low E for 8 strings.
I always wished I had 9 strings to put that root down there. I didnt want to give up anything above it.
I had it on my top neck of my Consle Grande, I had E6 on the bottom neck. Played this for many years before I went to my original Gibson Electra-Harp in 1946.
That is a good tuning, we didn't use the E in the middle, that is now more common. You had bottom 4 strings E9, you had a Bminor 7, and 2-3-4-a Diminished by tuning the 2nd string C# to D.
It changed the whole tune structure. I used that a lot!
But changed it to C# for St.Louis blues , and a song Speedy recorded "I'll never be free" etc........al |
