Hi Paul,
I have found them at a FedEx/UPS independent shipping store. Have also just made them from large boxes cut & taped together real good.
Also, grocery stores sometimes have nice heavy unused boxes.
Hope this helps.

Paul..Fedex now stocks boxes for shipping acoustic guitars which work well for most steel guitar cases (I would recommend calling ahead, the local office here is often out of stock.)You might try your local Guitar Center also. Ask them to save a few when they receive a delivery from Martin or other high end acoustic builders (the cheaper guitars are shipped without cases in thin, narrower boxes.) |

I don't and many other's don't either. Many of us purchase 1" Styrofoam sheets from H Depot, we cut pieces to match the case, secure it to the case. Then we just grab cardboard from wherever and cut/fit it to cover the Styrofoam, after all it's just a wrapping and has no other value other than protecting the Styrofoam. The Styrofoam protects the case and the Steel. Don't forget Duct tape ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

I don't think I'd trust duct tape. It doesn't have great adhesion or strength. While duct tape might be "good enough," there are better alternatives, like strapping tape (strength) under the wide clear packaging tape (adhesion). Or the fiber-reinforced brown paper tape. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

YEP, unless you're gonna go full SKB/Pelican type cases, the best bet is to wrap cardboard TIGHT around the styrofoam or that heavy-duty corregated carboard chunky stuff. The most damage comes fron the weight of the steel itself, banging itself to bits inside a too-loose box.
Let's treat "bits" as an exaggeration... |

I used to go to Home Depot and get moving boxes, and cut them to fit...that was until UPS people told me they won't honor any damage claims unless they do packing themselves, so ever since then I just drop guitar off ,and have them worry about it...it costs me $50-$60 more, but to me its worth it my peace of mind... _________________ www.steelguitarsonline.com |

I get large boxes from a busy Auto Body shop and they are free....Don't forget to leave the handle exposed for lifting. I always use USPS for shipping. |

Fedex may reject a package secured with duct tape; witnessed a lady needing to unpack the object that she was shipping and have them repack it before it would be accepted. |

It
s easy to pack yourself with house insulation foam and preferably double walled cardboard. Maybe 90 minutes of time but figure on $30 for foam (you'll have some left over for another job). You'll gain peace of mind knowing it's secure. How you pack and secure everything inside the box is very important too to preserve the case and contents. I've received plenty of steels that were packed very poorly but were unharmed. It's a crap shoot how it gets handled along the way. With a straight edge and hammer you can make professional bends in the cardboard that end up looking like a custom box but that's not a requirement.
Not the best packing job but it survived:

A great way to pack:

Good luck finding a shipper for hire that will go to the trouble of packing something that well! |

Yes... needs packed good both inside case and outside. The partition between the steel body and leg area cannot withstand very much impact. It will break away and the steel body will be damaged. |

I get bicycle shipping boxes from the local bike shops. They are happy to get rid of them once they've received their merchandise orders. They are thick-walled & large enough to be re-purposed for steel guitar shipment with only a modicum of effort. I'm very generous with popcorn, styrofoam or heavy duty bubble wrap + strapping tape.
Never had a problem with buying insurance for full value. Also, never had any catastrophes. |

The last time I shipped a pedal steel I went to the grocery store and got two large boxes and sort of made a custom box to fit. Most places that take in large shipments will have some they will give you for free. |

"Don't forget to leave the handle exposed for lifting. "
When I shipped a Permanent down to James Morehead, I didn't want to leave the old leather handle exposed. James told me to get a nylon dog collar and clip it to the cases handle brackets. I then put cardboard over the leather handle so it would not be exposed in any way. It worked great! That 1959 case arrived in perfect condition. Used styrofoam sheets and heavy cardboard. Tape had the fiberglass threads in it and was about 3 inches wide.
RIP James! _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

Hi Damir, I think I would question the UPS about their statement they will not honor the insurance if they do not pack. I know you have shipped many guitars in your time but I also have shipped a few including amps. I do not think they can take your money for insurance and then not pay off on the item if needed. That would not be legal. Also to drop it off and have a part time after hours student to put in a box and ship is kinda scary. I think this subject has been discussed at length here before and I do not think anyone has a good answer. Without a doubt the unit will get thrown around so the guitar should be packed well inside the case and I think access to the case handle is very important so a worker can grab it and not have to bear hug the unit. I have been very lucky I guess and not had any problems but their is always the first time. I surely hope not. Several years ago I brought a LDG from Jim Palenscar in Ca. and he had me pay $150.00 for shipping which packing was done by UPS. It got here OK but it was just wrapped in one layer of card board with nothing extra for safety. Some one with no experience just stuck it in a BOX. So I will wrap and box mine myself. I just don't like letting the case handle being exposed. If the box is on a belt and the handle hits something, the handle or the case could be damaged. The dog collar is my way to go! I also use those heavy canvas packing straps around the styrofoam. 2 of them are very cheap and insure that there's no way the case could ever open. _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

I agree John with changing the handle but a lot of cases you cannot do that. Extra banding around the outside is a good ideal. Improvise some kind of exterior handle so they do not have to bear hug it.
Very few if any would do that, they will just push and roll and tumble around, OUCH. Thanks, J.R. _________________ NOTHING..Sold it all. J.R. Rose |

good grief we are an odd bunch. Now we are arguing about tape.
No shipper will refuse a shipment if it has duct tape on it. Use whatever friggin tape you want.
I thought this thread was about the box.
and Doug is right, I have Duct Tape on my roof, it's Hurricane grade.
And by the way, those of us who ship with the case handle access, it's not popped up externally, it's tucked and folded down with an opening for someone to grab it, and they will.
It doesn't get stuck on a conveyor or anything else.
Then this, UPS or FED EX won't honor INS if they don't pack it ? How silly. You guys do realize that 90% of the FED EX and UPS shipments are packed by a private business location or by a person who prints out a label at home and pays for UPS to come pick it up. There is no disclaimer about WHO PACKS, but there is a disclaimer about HOW it's packed. There is also a form for driver inspection before he or she even accepts the package for items of value.
We have a home business, we have a UPS account, we pack everything here and print labels off the net. I have probably shipped 2000 to 3000 packages over the last decade. Maybe filed 2 or 3 claims each year, never an issue. I didn't bring 2000 or 3000 packages to the UPS store. Good grief.
We also pack and ship Post Office from home, NO issues what so ever.
I guess nobody here ever went to a UPS or FED EX HUB, people are lined up sending packages. Neither the FED EX or UPS HUB pack anything, they weigh your package, size it , ask you if you want insurance and take your money. Thats all they do. Oh , and they don't inspect the package for Duct tape either.
The good news is in a few weeks we'll have this same discussion, again ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Damir, I'm willing to bet that it was a "UPS Store" that said that, rather than a UPS official. UPS stores are independent franchises, and will tell you that you have to give them more money.
There have been cases of UPS damaging a shipment packed by a UPS Store, and refusing to pay cargo claims because the packaging was inadequate. And the UPS Store isn't UPS, but a separate company. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
