Sonny, I find it works well, if you have it within reach you can adjust your guitar,rhythm,& mike as you play.

I use a Behringer mixer. My lap steel feeds a volume pedal, into a Zomm MS-50G pedal, into the mixer on a stereo channel, into one or two Harbinger V2112 powered speakers.

Sonny, since a mixer is (almost always) a preamp, the only thing that matters is being able to get the tone you like out of it. And none of us can answer that question definitively. If it sounds good, it works good.
