Topic: CARTER vs Derby? |

whats everyones opinions on the CARTER and the Derby?
if i get the Marlen i mentioned in anohter thread, i'll sell or trade for a CARTER or a Derby?
Will the CARTER S10 stay put, or is the S10 DB helpful by increasing the weight some?

I had a Carter S10 body. 3/5 and it didn't bounce around for me. Sounds good too. And only 28 lbs out of the case..But , it all depends on the player...al

| Well, they're both good guitars. I played both last year at the Dallas show and I settled on the Derby. I played about every guitar at the show. That was fun and confusing. It ended up an easy decision for me. The hardest part was selling my SB Professional (sentimental reasons; I got over it quick). The Derby is solid as a rock. It has a great sound (I almost said tone, God forbid), it feels great, I like the aesthetics, I like Charlie Stepp (the builder) and it was a hard, but easy choice. If you've played them both, you know they feel and sound different. Which one feels and sounds the best to you is all that matters. Buy the Derby!!! |

DERBY. Pretty much what Tim said.
In tone, playability, & customer service, for me the Derby won hands down. |

| If Derby made a U-12, I would probably be playing one ....They sound great anywhere on the neck ...High, Low, Middle, it makes no difference....One of the most tonal balanced steel's I've heard.....Jim |

The only way to know is to play both.
I went though the same play all the brands exercise at the 04 St. Louis show and bought a Carter, but this is way too personal a decision to put much stock in posts on a forum.

Billy t i feel that a derby is better than a carter. a month ago i was going to buy a new carter but i didn't get the money from my other psg in time to do this. and i am glad i didn't. i was trying to make up my mind on what i should get then all of a sudden i seen something, it was the writing on the wall, it said ZUMSTEEL. made right here in missouri. and bruce is a heck of a nice fella. i know about 6 people personally that has zum's and everyone loves em. me too. there is just a little waiting time to get one built. but they are well worth the wait. thanks doc

yea, i talked to Bruce (ZUMM) last week and he remember me and my steel from 7 years earlier! damm. alway since i did not have a steel i felt 1.5 years is a long wait, so i found the Marlen that i may sell.
its funny in some ways - i am not very hot steel player, but i certainly could feel the difference between a Emmons LII and a Serria and A ZUMM (i will not include my old student Sho-Bud). to me even at my level, the ZUMM was MUCH better, it really wasn't close. if i had a steel to use and had the money, it would be hard to walk away from a new ZUMM, but that ain't the case at present. understand though i have never played a Mullen, Derby, Carter or a GFI. i spend days and days in the studio turning knobs, but i have a new urge to get a steel and play!
i'm having blast chatting about this stuff, espcially the old country rock music.
