Recently I picked up an 8 string Little Roy Wiggins lap steel to see if there was any aptitude for playing steel. I've played bass for many years and guitar for about ten years, before that so I've been able to plunk out some old ( slow ) chestnuts , albeit in a Boris Karloff on ice skates kind of manner. It's a lot fun ! I'd like to start saving up for a used non-pedal double neck instrument for a C6 and E13 tuning, and was curious what people on the forum would recommend to look for and what to avoid in my search . The Morel lap steel was just right for me to start on, though I don't have the greatest faith in the tupperware like nut as a tone generator. I'd appreciated any comments and advice!

thanks ,

I see the following doubleneck steels for sale most frequently:

  • Fender Stringmaster (dual pickup model, wood body)
  • Fender Dual 8 (trapezoid pickup model, wood body)
  • Rickenbacker D16 (two eight string necks, metal body)
  • National Console family (two eight string necks, wood body)
  • Gibson Console Grande (two eight string necks, wood body)

The Fender steels are the most highly regarded of the doublenecks. If you find one in good condition, it can last you forever.
You'll also see Magnatone doubleneck (woodbody) steels occasionally. At the right price these can be a bargain; some of the higher end Magnatones were great.
