I've seen Red Elm used for acoustic guitars. Sometimes called Slippery Elm or Swamp Elm, it's similar in hardness on the Janka Scale to mahogany. I found a couple of nice pieces and decided to glue them up for lap steels. Soft curly maple is about the same hardness so I sandwiched in a piece of soft curly maple. Has anyone else tried Red Elm for lap steels?

Real pretty grain in the wood. That's going to be a beauty!

Playing this should be a requirement....

Thats a great looking chunk of wood. I've never use elm, but as long as its well cured and stable, I don't see why it can't be used. I think there are a lot of great lesser used alternative woods out there.

Didn't Jerry Byrd record a song called "Slippery Elm"?
