All this controversy over the "Maverick" some of my friends suggested I make a CD with a Maverick. I am not the best player in the world, but there are things that can be done with 3/1. Also I can donate the money from the 10 CDs I would sell to the Animal projects I work on. If I do this, what songs should I play. Can I "Thumbpick"? Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works. |

Great idea! It could even go further: What if we ask the Forumites to create ONE recording each on their guitar and use Maverick specs only: ABC and only one Knee. (I presume not everyone HAS a Maverick)
These tunes should be Tabbed and added to the CD. This would be an excellent way to create beginners training material, and knowing the level of the Forumites, there will be some advanced tutorials as well.
Someone has to coordinate all this to avoid song duplication.
And all backing tracks should be done by one volunteer to create consistency on the CD. (Band-in-a-Box?)
There is no reason why we cannot use the Internet to get a bunch of private recordings together to create one CD. And it is for a good cause. Anyone have a title in mind?
I am happy to donate one song.

Ed,
Great Idea, I'll donate one song & tab. I've a got a Emmons student 3 & 1 I have at my office. There is a lot you can do with out floors or knees. I have since learned that one of the possible overlooked concepts of the pedal steel guitar is understanding the open tuning and mastering it and then add the floors and the knees. I think there is some truth to this information given to me. I'll donate a song and tab. |

First song to mind, was "Honky Tonk Angel", it was in the Sho-Bud book with the picture of Jeff Newman on the cover, onstage at the Opry playing a fingertip. I bought that book, along with the Neil F.(sp)LP of intros and endings. Some real good stuff on both for a beginer, loaned both to don't remember who, never got either one back. ABC+Es lower was the way it was tabbed,HTA sounded pretty good back then.
FWIW, I was going to get Jeff to autograph the book when he was in Saluda last year, but forgot to take it. Check this on Ebay

I'm a real novice player and couldn't add to the CD but I can add to the discussion.
I spent a 3 days with Jeff at the cabin back in 97'. He showed me how so much can be played with just the A&B pedals. I also saw him at the Smoky Mtn. Jamboree in Knoxville 96' when he had Paul Franklin, Larry Sasser and I can't remember the other player on stage at the same time with him.
He made everyone fold up their Knees and play "release me". I guarantee you if you closed your eyes you couldn't tell they weren't using any knees.

This is really getting interesting. If players would donate a song for this purpose maybe we could get more beginners on Steel.I would like to set a panel of "Judges" to decide what songs could be used. Looks like I just cut myself out of a spot. Now nobody will ever know how good or bad I play.Ed naylor Steel Guitar Works. |

Ed, this is an example of the player being better than the equipment. It seems modern man wants to change things to his liking, rather than adapt to what he has. "Urban Sprawl" is one example.
I played without pedals, then pedals and no levers, then pedals and one lever(for 20 years). I can't do much more with my modern guitar than I could with the old one. I just learned a different way of doing it.
As a matter of fact, I concentrated more on my playing ability when I had fewer gadgets. I have no doubts that a Maveric could be used on most of the sessions cut in Nashville. You do not have to play any specific licks... Just tasty licks......JD |
