A loaded question I know and probably will get a lot of different answers, but thats okay too. I prefer a mellow sound out of my E9th neck on my Zum and wondered what strings and what pickup you guys would recommend that would lean in that direction. _________________ Zum Encore, Remington D8 non pedal, Hallmark Mosrite clone, Gretsch 6120 DSW, Gretsch G5210T-P90 Electromatic Jet Two 90,1976 Ibanez L5, Eastman archtop, Taylor Dreadnaught, Telonics pedal, Squire Tele, Squire Strat, Fender Tonemaster, Gold Tone 5 string banjo, Little Wonder tenor banjo, 3 Roland cubes 30s and 80, Carvin combo bass amp |

Hey Larry,
On your new Zum? Try nickel strings first. Could be the answer before changing stuff.

Thanks Pat, thats the kind of knowledge I am seeking. I have a set of them that I have never tried. Try a FreeLoader or Black Box - you can use the variable-impedance control to greatly mellow your pickup's response by turning that knob down. Pickups themselves are unlikely to be mellow on their own.
Flats or half-round strings help too.

I had a George L E66 on my E9 and a GL 10-1 on my C6. I much preferred the mellower 10-1 tone _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |

Larry,
I would recommend some kind of double coil pickup, that would take the edge off and nickle strings as was suggested above. |

I changed to nickel strings (live strings) and got a Freeloader and am pleased with the results,,,I dont see a need now to change the pickups in my steel ! I am a happy camper _________________ Zum Encore, Remington D8 non pedal, Hallmark Mosrite clone, Gretsch 6120 DSW, Gretsch G5210T-P90 Electromatic Jet Two 90,1976 Ibanez L5, Eastman archtop, Taylor Dreadnaught, Telonics pedal, Squire Tele, Squire Strat, Fender Tonemaster, Gold Tone 5 string banjo, Little Wonder tenor banjo, 3 Roland cubes 30s and 80, Carvin combo bass amp |
