I don't think the steel player has been formally identified.
Those recordings date from 1966. Some were produced by Waylon and Donnie Owens and some by Buddy Wheeler and Owens.
Supposed to be Waylon on lead guitar.
Wheeler was a steel player, so he'd be my guess--but it coulda been anybody in AZ at the time. I think Dave Musgrave was around Phoenix at that time as well.
Here's a pic of Wheeler in the 1950s.

when i was a kid we lived in phoenix and my dad worked at canada dry soda co. and sanford clark was one of the other drivers. he had apparently blew most of his record money,i think he even bought a plane but couldnt fly it.we went to his house pretty often,he gave us a collie that loved kids, his name was burgie because he loved burgermeister beer and thats what sandy drank.he told us he grew up with duane eddy, this was probably early sixties.the only really good steel player i remember locally was a guy named bob olsen, had a fender 1000,i had a lap steel and he would tell me to go get it once in a while and sit next to him and play when he told me to,what a great guy...sandy was too... |

Another great steel player of some reputation, in Phoenix, at that time was Donnie Buzzard. I know he did some sessions. _________________ Ray Harrison

As I remember, Zane Beck was an active steel player in Phoenix around that time. I took my ZB over for him to make some changes on in 1965. He took me out with him where he played in a huge dance hall, with a big band. Great music, great player and person. |
