I'm considering changing from pedal to lap. I also have a dobro and wonder what would be the best tuning to put on both. I thought about A6. What are your recommendations. Thanks Bob M

if this should be in steel without pedals please move

I'm using E6 on Lap, D6 on Dobro.

E6 - (low to high) B, C#, E, G#, B, E
D6 - (low to high) A, B, D, F#, A, D

You can by E7 sets of strings the will do E6 on the lap. The normal Open G sets will do D6 on Dobro.

I may, in fact, be nuts. However, I am screwed onto the right bolt... Jesus!

Why not have that the best of both worlds, a D-10 with a non-pedal tuning on one neck?

Mike I need to reduce weight as I' getting to old to handle a double neck. I had two excellent ones but sold them due to weight. 93lbs. Each or close to it. That's why I thought of going to lap and dobro as I have both already. Thanks Scott for what you shared. Want to learn one tuning for both. Bob

Bob,
I use an A major tuning on both lap and dobro. E, C#, A, E, C#, A, top to bottom.
Works for me. Very Happy

I'm using the same tuning on everything lately, D6th. <pre>Pedal steel (10): D G B D F# A B D F# E
Pedal steel (8): G B D F# A B D F#
8-string lap: G B D F# A B D F#
6-string lap: G B D F# A D</pre>
If you're used to C6th, this would make sense (just lower everything a step, or raise your pedal steel a step like I did).
Applying a similar logic to E9th: <pre>Pedal steel: B D E F# G# B E G# D# F#
8-string lap: B D E G# B C# E G#
6-string lap: E G# B C# E G#</pre>
The pedal E9th evolved from the 8-string lap E13th shown above. The C# string was replaced with the A pedal.

You might like this on a 6-string lap: <pre>A C# E G# B E</pre> It's one of my favorites.
