Occasionally Marty Muse will play with them at the Broken Spoke, I understand.

Love the Derailers, but the music screams out for a pedal steel.. They aren't the same without it... bob

I'd replace the keys with steel guitar. I heard them at Gruene Hall a few years back and their sound was very hollow. The leads cried out for steel guitar. Keys just can't fill the void. Just mho 🙂

Used to be a big fan here. Have a couple of their CD's. Haven't followed them much since Villanueva left.
I can't imagine that honky tonk or Bakersfield sound without steel guitar or with keys.
Hope you enjoy the show though if you go see them somewhere. |

Caught the Derailers last night here in Austin (one of the opening acts for Dwight Yoakam, the other being Two Tons of Steel from San Antonio), and was quite pleased to see/hear the great Marty Muse playing with them on steel.
Agree with others, the steel adds a lot to the Derailers sound, especially with a great player like Marty in that role (and he wore shoes...  ).
My phone doesn't take great pictures -- but we were pretty close!

They need to drop the keyboard. Does not go with their music. I miss Tony. I used to follow and keep up with them but when he left I stopped. Their music is all about Pedal steel and they don't have it anymore. Maybe Bryan wanted to get away from the Bakersfield sound but big mistake I think. Just my 2 cents, J.R.

I toured with them for their two Sony releases, 9 years years total. The first two was when Tony was still there.
After he left, Brian said he was done. But Tony said he could keep the songs, the name, the bookings, the management/booking, so Brian decided to keep it going.
Brian NEVER abandoned the Bakersfield sound. But Brian did choose to abandon performing some of their biggest hits (which I disagreed with). Brian's style was more pop and Liverpool style in his writing. But Brian sounds as much like Buck than anyone I've played with.
I was on four albums, and one of them was a tribute to Buck "Under the Influence of Buck"...Brian nails it.
But when I started playing with them, they never acknowledged being a five piece band with steel. You never saw a steel player on posters, albums, etc. They were a four piece band with a steel player. Heck, they wouldn't even put me on salary like the rest of the band.
After Tony left, Brian always had me in the artwork and acknowledged my existence.... |

Interesting story Chris, Thanks for sharing. I used to see them years back at the Broken Spoke in Austin and Scott Walls played with them then. I do not think he toured with them. Scott is a great picker and fit with them well. I am sorry that I never got to hear or see you with them but going to see about getting some of the CD's with you. I am sure it will be great. Scott at that time was working with Don Walsner(sp?) most of the time. Skinny Don, Pete Farhardo, Howard Kalish and Justin Trevanio setting in from time to time. Boy, This all goes back a ways. Just some good memories. J.R.
