I'm starting up a nonprofit, Steel Resolve, that is going to provide steel guitars and lessons to kids across the country. I'm not a lap steel player (yet), so I'm not very familiar with the builders.
We're looking for something that will be resilient against the rigors of use from a ten to sixteen year old player, that won't break the bank. Basically, the best cost effective option.
What would you recommend?
Thanks in advance for your help!
And if you have any questions about the charity, PM or email me. I would be happy to answer and share more about it. _________________ STEEL RESOLVE, INC.

I would suggest something like this:
The Rogue lap steel guitar can be bought for less than $100 ($99.99) on the internet.

I agree with Erv on the Rogue. Also, the SX brand is a nice guitar as well and wont break the bank.

Yes, the SX is also good bang for the buck. You can get this one, complete with legs for about $20 more:
