Hey Ya'll,
Can anyone comment on the viability of the old Gibson/Norlin/Moog Lab series amps, specifically the Lab L6 (100 watts SS, 1x15 speaker) with pedal steel?
I may have an opportunity to pick one up pretty cheap and I think I've read in a couple places that some folks think they're pretty cool for steel, but I figured I'd see what the powers that be on the forum had to say about it since a lot of folks I know don't have much experience with them.
FWIW, I already have other more traditional amp options that work great for me (this likely would just be a studio toy) but if I could get this at a cheap enough price, it could be a funky thing to have around...
Any opinions to offer? Much obliged if so!
Cheers,
-b |

I'm pretty sure the L6 is a bass amp. Doesn't mean it might not sound good though. |

I think your right Doug, but it was the 15" speaker that caught my attention, plus it's just a couple miles away from my house and I swear I've seen folks gush about the LAB series before, but maybe I'm crazy... I love Fender tube stuff and my Session 400, but with a penchant for vintage gear, my interest was piqued....
By the way, I still absolutely love my Encore, I'll have to send you some photos soon from gigs this summer! |

Lab amps are pretty cool. I have a 112 version, can't remember the model number but sounds very nice with guitar. Have not played pedal steel through it. Another SS amp of mention is a Polytone and I have played steel guitar through it and it has a a jazzier vibe and sounds sweet with an archtop guitar. These amps have been out of production for decades so they may need service but mine are still working fine. |

I had a LAB guitar amp with a 15" Electrovoice. Awesome for steel! I was very disappointed when I sold it and got a Vegas. Long story! _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

The only drawback to a bass amp for pedal steel is the lack of reverb. If you have a reverb unit, nearly every bass amp will sound great for steel. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

Thanks for all the responses guys... If I could get it at the right price, I might take a chance on it. Not sure what speaker is in it but if it's an old EV, that would be even more enticing. Thanks again, I'll keep folks posted if I end up getting it! |
