I also have a Beard MA-8 and it is a really nice guitar and Jim has a very reasonable price on it.

Let me rephrase. Do yourself a 6th tuning or simply add two strings to the G tuning?

You're talking about a made in Maryland Beard MA-8 that goes for around $3800 new. This is a made in China Gold Tone that was designed by Paul Beard.

Jim, does this have the setup by Beard sticker under the bass side screen affixed to the back inside the guitar or does it have the Gold Tone sticker?

I have been using G6th tuning EGBDEGBD (low to High). Makes minor chords really easy. Pete, it doesn't have a pickup. Great guitar but I need to concentrate on pedal steel.I'll check tonight the sticker inside.

Thanks Jim... looking forward to the new adventure.

David Biggers- there is an extensive dealership network for Goldtone listed on their website. Also carried by online stores at a nice discount to msrp. The 8 strings abound new at a great price point. You will find something for sure.

Nope. Called and called.
Not one single store in Texas is an actual Goldtone dealer.
I thought I had this one bought quick enough.
Oh well. Have a great time playing my 8 string. Ha ha ha.

Lol... I know how that feels....I miss craigslist deals all the time. ..

For clarification...Jim and I had been working on a deal from early on. I think jim bumped the thread thinking I lost interest when we had an email mixup and communication lapsed for a time.

I got ahold of Goldtone. They have a Blem.
Sending me pics and payment options.
I'm excited.
When I get it it's going straight to Charley's Guitar shop for a
new Fishman pickup system.
Maybe I'll get a chance to hear Alex and Clay play
A little steel.

Awesome. .. good for you!

Gokdtone will add a pickup at their setup shop for an adder I believe. ..

New factory setup might be totally worth the difference in price. ... I am hoping that this guitar will accommodate a slightly different tuning then stock without needing the neck reset or nut modified...

I don't think you are going to need a neck reset or modification to the nut for a slightly different tuning.

Unless something is radically off, it's extremely rare to reset a neck on a squareneck resonator guitar.

I asked Jim about the sticker in the bass side screenhole but never received an answer.

If there is a Beard setup sticker in there it means that when the guitar was shipped from China it went through the Beard shop in Maryland for final assembly and setup. These are typically the more desirable Gold Tones.

If it has a Gold Tone sticker inside it means it shipped from China to Gold Tone in Florida, and though they are generally fine there have been some that got out into the world with some poor setups and structural issues. As to what percentage, haven't the slightest idea.

If one is interested in buying a new one the way to go is to order it from Beard. They have a trade up policy so that if you have a GAS attack and want to get an actual made-in-Maryland Beard guitar down the line, you can trade it in and apply the money toward the new instrument.

Not sure if you are aware of this - the current state-of-the-art Fishman Nashville pickup is only available for 6 string resonators.

The old Fishman "donut" pickup which attaches to the screw underneath the cone will work, but to put it in plain English - they sound terrible. You would be happier with one of the onboard mini microphone systems.

I've had good results with the "donut" pickup.

Erv, I would have to hear it to believe it.

Some folks have had better results then others depending what else is in their signal chain. I have made it sound better in one of my guitars by using it with the Aura Jerry Douglas pedal with the 16 microphone images, but it pales in comparison to the combination of the Aura with the Nashville pickup. Not even close.
