Back in the early 80's, my first professional pedal steel was a used D10 w/10+6 that had a basket weave covering. I have some photos of it, but no way to scan them. I've seen a few others. I believe Cookie Jones had one.

Cleaning was a breeze...just a feather duster or shop air.

When I started playing Unis, I sold it to a local who bought and sold gear out of his house. He's gone now, so I don't know what ever happened to it, but I'd sure like to have it back if possible.

Another guy I met at Doc Holiday's club on 7th Street Road had a D10 Emmons with a Levi's® treatment complete with blue denim and logo. I don't recall if it had a pocket. Only one I've ever seen. Tommy White and Rex Wiseman were playing around this area a lot at that time. Possibly Gary Timberlake and Mr. T, so one of them may remember the guy's name.

How many different odd or unusual covering packages did Emmons offer back then? Were they limited to special order or did they just produce a few for variety? What others have you seen?

Any P/P historians care to share info?

I worked at Emmons building Push Pulls while Big Ron was still running it. He would make a guitar with about any Mica you could find. Some customers sent their own Mica in and we built it. Custom Lacquer was also offered. Some unfinished bodies were sent out for custom paint work.

Jack Stanton played an Emmons with a snake skin covering. I don't know if he still has it but he sure made it sound good.

Doug, I'm curious. Did you notice if any of the "exotic" laminate coverings affected overall tone.....either positively or negatively?

Yeah Doug, that D10 basketweave is like the one I had. Sad

I was taking lessons from Tom Offut here in Louisville and he found it in the local trader paper. It was a mess and tuning all screwed up, but it cleaned and tuned up nicely. I played it for at least 10 yrs.

Here is one with Russ. I think he also still has a Mullen G2 with basket weave mica that he obtained from Emmons

I don't think there would be any effect in tone but it sure would effect me, don't think I could play one of those, would make me go cross-eyed, LOL

You get used to the looks pretty quick sitting behind it. It's not a distraction at all. Anyway, your focus is on the fretboards.

The one I had sounded terrific too.

Doug, can you recall other examples of odd or unusual cabinets?

Call me crazy, but I have always wanted a basket weave guitar. I even went and bought a mica apron from the factory in the event I come across a guitar with a damaged apron! If anyone has a weave guitar any configuration I have been looking for one for 30 years. Please

I have seen an anniversary S-10 in a denim mica which was pretty cool. I bought a brown fatback from Bobbe with textured matt rosewood mica. The other unusual mica I have seen was a green (textured) SD 12 for sale on the forum.

here is another nice weave that was on the forum a while back....wish I had bought it!

Found a pic of a pic of my old cut tail basketweave. This was the first or second gig playing out. 35 yrs. younger and 50# lighter. Still had hair.

Great band...played a wide variety of music. Bluegrass to Buck to Bob Seger to Bob Wills. Great education for me.

Really nice basketweave Uni 12 right now in the classifieds. Wish I could.

Jimmy,
You have a chance to buy the one you missed; in fact it might be the same one. Don Hemmer is selling it. I personally like the basket weave. See:

Steve,

Thank you for the heads up. That guitar is the one! 5k is a bit much for me as I would have to sell my fatback D10 quickly and I can't see that happening.

Sheesh that thing is spot on!

Yeah, I'd buy that thing in a heartbeat if I had the bucks. Everything I could ever need or want. Universal tuning, Emmons P/P and basketweave covering.

Aftermarket snakeskin. In the 80's I had a band called Diamondback and after the original guitar player left and moved to Alabama he sent it to me. Seemed like the thing to do at the time...
It's help up pretty well.

Cool Jack. Still like to see if anyone has one of the levi's denim Emmons guitars. Always thought they were cool.

FWIW, you can still buy denim pattern Formica brand laminate...another option is denim pattern vinyl wrap for you diy'ers. I got some samples of faded blue and black denim vinyl wrap from Etsy.

The blue pattern is OK but it is really blue and not appealing at all to me...just doesn't look like their photo...neither does the black for that matter.
They also show a grey and original blue denim but I didn't order samples.

The black does have a denim fabric pattern but it doesn't show in the photo I posted.
Posted another photo under bright light that shows the grain better.

It is pretty subtle and probably going to be my choice for my next steel wrap job...if I ever get another one...😩
