Here's a descriptive take on Cindy Cashdollar's magnificent steel playing:
http://playpedalsteel.com/cindy-cashdollar-tonal-personality/

I enjoy steel playing of all sorts: especially from players whose notes come from the heart. Cindy's playing is definitely deep; soulful. She was one of the first steel players I ever heard, and the notes and sounds she made on the C6 neck were inspirational. Smile

Ya'll may have seen this on another topic: I'm going to begin making player profiles that organize relevant information about influential players. These will include their tonal personality: kind of a descriptive take on the player's tone and soul (emotional aspects of playing).

Here's more mentioned in the other thread:

Quote:
I believe there's a lot of musical content in the world that discusses facts/theories: but not enough involving the emotional or soulful aspects of playing instruments and music. After all, most people listen to music for its emotional elements. They listen with their hearts. Especially non-musicians.

These tonal personalities are for better understanding what makes these player's notes hit your soul. You know, the notes and sounds that make you get goosebumps while you're listening.

As I said there, these are a work in progress, but I will be adding more details, players, and tonal ideas soon. So far I have Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Green, Cindy Cashdollar, and Greg Leisz. These players can be found here:

Sincerely,
Casey

Interesting stuff there. FWIW, I first became aware of Cindy in the 90's through the Nashville Network TV shows. She was playing dobro with Leon Redbone at the time. It was just the two of them and it was great. I believe she was touring with him at the time.

I think she's a total and versatile musician.

Thanks Jerry. I bet those shows sounded awesome. I'll have to see if there's some videos of them on YouTube, and check them out sometime.

I've never seen Cindy perform live. I'd love to catch her with Sonny Landreth sometime soon, that'd be a sweet show. Cool

Looks like she's got a lot of cool upcoming shows...

I used to catch Cindy on a regular basis back when she played dobro with the John Herald Band in upstate NY. This was before she got into playing the upright steel. Great lady. This would have been back between 1981-1984. I used to intentionally plan weekend backpacking trips near where I knew they would be playing on a Sunday afternoon. I would come down out of the hills after a great weekend, looking a little grungy and head to the bar where they were playing. Cindy's playing would mesmerize me. Her anthem was an instrumental song she wrote called "Slide Mountain Rag", which is named for one of the larger mountains in the Catskill Range. She was living in her hometown of Woodstock, NY at the time and where she is again living. Cindy played at the PSGA show last November 2015. She got a standing ovation from a packed room.

Paraphrasing Martin Mull (or Frank Zappa or Steve Martin or whoever was first), capturing a tonal personality in writing would be a bit like dancing about architecture... Winking

A five second sound clip is all it takes.

BTW, Cindy is an awesome player.

Cindy is a great player and a total sweetheart of a person but those things don't always have much to do with each other. Plenty of musicians that can give you goosebumps and spiritual feelings are absolut douche bags.

Cindy is equally adept at 8 string non-pedal, 6 string lap steel, 6 string dobro, and weissenborn.

On 8 string non-pedal, though she has an excellent command of the traditional licks and techniques of western swing, she can also make the tunings fit in with a contemporary sound so that it doesn't always sound anachronistic or like a throwback to the '40s and '50s.

I'm not a shrink, but think the "douche" thing is a "wall", that's all, probably due to some unfounded fears..like the fear of being nice.

Cindy played the PSGA show at Norwalk, CT. last fall.
She played a double neck, 8 string with no pedals and she rocked the house! What a great musician!

Bob...I'm not a shrink,either but
the "absolut" part MAY have something to do with vodka.
