Topic: instruction material for 8 string steel |

i have a French steeler who owns a Fender 1000 and is looking for instructional material.
i've already told him that i don't know of any for D8 psg
any recommendations ?

Yet another reason why beginners shouldn't start with antique pedal steels. The Fender 1000 should be priced out of reach of anyone who doesn't already know how to play, IMHO.
Glad I got that off my chest. 
Anyway, most beginner E9th material sticks to the middle 6 strings. It all applies directly to an 8 string guitar. Jeff Newman was a master at reducing the pedal steel to basics in a way that beginners could understand. www.jeffran.com

A book that was written for Fender pedal steels is:
Pedal steel guitar : eight or ten string tuning /
by Sharp, Don.
Mel Bay Publications, c1972.
I found it in our public library, but I cannot find it online.
I would reccomend setting him up with some standard E9 and B6th or C6th 8-string tunings.

The 2-volume Cindy Cashdollar Western Swing videos are good for non-pedal.
They're $29.95 each from Amazon. Or, I have a used set (with booklets) that I'm though with and have been meaning to post to Buy & Sell anyway. Email in interested... |

Is it more important to have the high G or low F in regards to the C6 instructional material if you have an eight string and a not a ten string ? My Fender 1000 is set up with E on top but I'm thinking about getting some instructional tapes and was wondering how much a factor the lack of a high G would be.

| You'll use the low F more than the high G. Most instructional material doesn't use the first string. |
