I'd like to send out a candid thought for my fellow steel players. Personally, I really believe that steel and fiddle players, as a majority, recognize the washed out state of main stream country music now a days. Honestly, it's quite heart breaking.
Tim McGraw, Shania Twain, Toby Keith, and the great Satan: Kenny Chesney have single handedly turned country on it's ear in a short amount of time. Every current cookie cutter song sounds like the theme of a 90's Friday night sitcom intro on ABC. What the fudge happened?
What is in your CD player? Who do you listen to in order to gain meaningful music nourishment from?
I'll start this off. I've been challenged by The Flying Burrito Brothers, anything by Waylon Jennings, Hank Sr., Jr, and Ray Price. . . Also, Dale Watson, The Derailers, and Bruce Robison have been a current favorite. Tommy Detamore is the best steel player of all time - I cast my lot in for his hall of fame nomination.
Who inspires you, and for what reason?

I don't use my CD player in the truck that much anymore. I keep my XM Radio tuned to Hanks Place (Ch 13) or XM America (Ch 10) or XM Comedy, or one of the classic rock stations. At home, If I do listen to a CD, it's usually, Hag, Jones, Buck, Price, Bush, or depending on my mood, Blue Oyster Cult, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Rush, Led Zepelin. Hard Rock or Hard Country! ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/smile.gif) |

I have a fair steel guitar CD collection. I listen to Emmons and Pennington,Ferrell Swing Cats,50s/60s Price and Faron,Darrell McCall,Randy Beavers,Jernigan,Randy Reinhart,Dickey Overby, maybe even Bobby Sizemore. I like older country and 60s rock, swing, jazz, and Hawaiian. Don't get much out of the bulk of todays country or rock but an occasional song sounds good to my ear. |

Hmmm, among the things Sanie-Claws brung me was Gretchen Wilson's new CD (with 2 good songs..."When I Think About Cheatin'" and "The Bed". I also got another Norah Jones CD, but may fave song by her is still "Don't Know Why". "Jake Hooker and the Outsiders" is currently playing on my stereo, and it's a real breath of fresh air to hear music with the steel so "up front"! Anyone who's really "into" those up-front fiddle and steel sounds of the '60s, and Johnny Bush stylings, will simply LOVE this CD!!!...steel by Gary Carpenter (really smooth, and there's no lead guitar to clutter things up! ).
Also of note was a CD by Bobby Flores "Just for the Record", a steelplayer who played fiddle on the Hooker CD. This CD (a carbon-copy of the of the old '60s Ray Price stuff) also has fine steel work, and that's easy to understand when you look at the credits (mostly steelers)...Randy Rienhard, Bobby Flores, Jim Loessberg, Dicky Overby, Jerry Blanton, Herb Steiner, Rick Price...wow, you get the picture. ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/wink.gif) |

As a country neophite, I have only recently "discovered" Johnny Bush, and I see this is more the real deal. I was recently delighted to find a used Bush Cd from 1996 I believe, that had good steel throughout every cut- the credits: Herb Stiener and Jimmy Day playing steel! I am now in the process of checking out these other Texas guys. Hail Texas! Jim |

oops sorry Herb for the misspelling, but thanks for the music. Not to digress to much, but if you read this, what cuts did you and /or Jimmy Day play on that 1996 or so J. Bush release. Every cut is excellent, Jim |
