My band Double Edge playing one of Narvel's big country hits, Drift Away in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Video quality isn't that great, but we surely had a Narvelous time!

Dobie Gray had the version played on pop radio in the 70's. That's the one I remember most. It's also on a Narvel record I have from the same era.

Missed a chance to play Narvel's show at one of the local Jamborees. Was sent his material to learn and did so, but the thing was cancelled...best I recall he got sick.

Narvel tunes Reconsider Me and Slip Away are among my favorites of his. I'm glad to know he's still at it.

I bet you guys really enjoyed playing with him. Does he still do most of the lead guitar work? He's a pretty good picker on the rockabilly stuff as I recall.

Narvel's version of "Drift Away" peaked at #8 in the country charts in 1973.

Kind Regards, Walter

I think Dobie Gray released it first, but I ain't sure. Muttering"Drift Away" is a song written by Mentor Williams and originally recorded by John Henry Kurtz on his 1972 album Reunion. In 1973 the song became Dobie Gray's biggest hit, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and certified gold by the RIAA.It was covered by many some are here; Allan Clarke, Roy Orbison, Ike and Tina Turner, Humble Pie, Mud, Rod Stewart, Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles, Neville Brothers, Michael Bolton, Jim Hollis, Christian Kane, The Rolling Stones, The Nylons, Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen, Judson Spence, The Doobie Brothers, Billy Joe Royal and John Kay.[2] Folk singer Tom Rush recorded the song on his album What I Know, released in 2009

Hey Jerry, Narvel still does a lot of his own guitar work on the Rock A Billy songs on the same black tele we all remember him playing. He absolutely gives all he has on every song he sings. His fans love every minute of his show and stand in line for hours afterward to get a picture with him. We all know what a pleasure it is to play for a sold out crowd that genuinely love the artist. We will be working a lot with him the rest of the year so everybody come on out and get Narvelized.

I second that Jimmie, Narvel is one of the good guys. We backed him a few times when I lived in Indy. I called him and left a message and he called back within an hour. I got to see him again last year and he still has a long line for pic's and autographs.

I was honored to back up Narvel a few times. He is one of the nicest, and most talented person anyone could want to go on stage with. He does give it his all at every performance, and can send chills up your back with some of the beautiful high notes he can hit.
