I wanted to congratulate Tommy Dodd for his continued contributions to the Steel Guitar Community AND his performance Sunday at the Georgia Steel Guitar Show.
Tommy's creativeness is unprecedented. He challenges himself to promote the instrument above and beyond the "Norm". His capabilities to play outside the box is what will promote the instrument into the next dimension. Thanks Tommy
Because of some health issues, recently, I bribed a person with hotdogs and hamburgers to drive me to the show this past Sunday. This was the person's first steel show and initial introduction to the steel guitar. He was amazed and Happy that I asked him to drive me. He really liked Rusty Danmyers performance, too.
Bill Ferguson and Tommy are the heart beat of this wonderful show.
Thanks to these two gentlemen for their efforts to keep it going.....

Amen and Amen!! Bill has been a great friend for many years, and I appreciate all the work He's done archiving all the videos and allowing us to enjoy them. I first saw Tommy years ago in St. Louis and am amazed at His talent!. I don't think anyone has more enthusiasm for the steel guitar than Tommy, and I "dig" His approach and "style" on everything He does, especially "Dance with Me". These guys are the "real deal". Thanks, Lonnie _________________ Music is probably the most "spiritual of mankinds emotions, and when practised with a pure heart, can lead one into the presence of God, who invented it. I'll add a tip of my own and a pile of attaboys to both! Bill works so hard to keep the shows working that I don't know how he finds the energy for his own great musical sets, and yes, Tommy always knocks it out of the park! I was playing at Riverfest in Chattanooga Sunday and had to miss this show to my great disappointment. Everyone in the Southeast should make the trip to the next one, you'll be glad you did. _________________ Stop by the Steel Store at: www.markvanallen.com

Mark.....
Great truths to this.
Bill's love for the instrument and community are a selfless act for sure.
For example....Lloyd Greens video, "Farewell Party" has garnered nearly half a million views. This time capsule and the views are a testament of importance of those youtube video's.
Tommy provides an exhilarating performance in the truest sense. The man takes the instrument to newer levels than anyone I know of.
I really want Bill's Hair tonic, though

Charley, thanks so much for your kind words. And too, thanks to the others above this post that have made very nice remarks and compliments. I know Bill F. works many, many tedious works putting together the show (as well as the others on the board of the GaSGA). He does it because he loves the instrument and wants to do what he can to continue the interest and promote steel guitar music. We all would love to see a new "crop" of young guns at our show each time but that will not happen without the promotion and enthusiasm that our shows perpetuate. We all do what we can to spread the word about steel guitar.
As far as my part, I try to play alternative types of music primarily to show the steel guitar is a musical voice for all genres and forms. I love true country as much as anyone but I strongly feel the steel can shine in many different musical arenas. The steel guitar does not know, and doesn't care what type of music it's delivering. The music has to come from the heart of the player. As I always say...."Play what you feel and hope for the best!!"
Thanks again for all of your kind words. |

I remember hearing Tommy Dodd play some unique songs at a steel show probably 20 years ago. It was either at Knoxville or St. Louis.
It was an incredible rendition of the songs and super impressive representation on the pedal steel. It was probably one of the most memorable moments listening to someone at a steel show.
Luckily I saw Tommy one evening at the Station Inn and was able to tell him personally my enjoyment of hearing his playing and especially the song selection. |
