What is your string brand preference ? Tried them all over 35 years. I have been using Earnie Ball standard strings for about 10 years now. I found that they have the warmest but not a to bright tone.

I had an endorsement with Ernie Ball through the 90's, until I found Jagwire. I also have tried and play EVERY Maker of Strings; and Jagwire is IT for me> (nickle wound of course)

D'Addario is my preference because I get'em for $9bucks a set. They are the stainless steel, and I can get 12 to 22 gigs out of'em, before I have to start retuning levers.

I've been using Live Steel Strings for a couple of years and really like them. Their resilience lasts a long time. I'm partial to the stainless steel sets.

Last couple times, I've ordered and been using Emmons S.I.T. from Juststrings.com. Less than 6 bucks a set and last and sound just as good as anything I've used. I prefer stainless also.

George L's "Nashville Gauges". I've tried just about every brand on the market and go back to the George L's. I've stopped trying other brands and will stick with the George L's. I've used them ever since the name change from Bill Lawrence (L&L Sales) to George L's.

I've been using Live Steel Strings ever since I tried my 1st set. I always avoided the high 3rd string because it sounded thin, until I tried the Live Steel Strings. Now I get a full, rich tone out of the 3rd.
I also prefer the nickel strings for a richer tone.

To be honest, I don't think anybody here could tell one string brand from another during a "blindfold" test. I think it is psychological.

I buy what is the cheapest or most readily available locally (I don't buy anything online)and that is GHS "pedal guitar boomers". Local music store orders them for me 5 sets at a time. I get about 7-8 gigs per set; that is about 2 weeks for me.

I did use George L strings on my Sho Bud D 10. I had metal necks and George L E 66 pickups with all George L .155 cables... The Georges L's were the Cats meow on that guitar.

Over the years, I’m pretty sure I’ve used most.

Sho~Bud
SIT’s
GTI’s
George L’s
Ernie Ball
D’Addario’s
Jagwire
Live Steel

The last several years I’ve been using Jagwire and Live Steel Cryogenic Nickels... I’d have to say the Jagwire Nickel and LSC Nickels are my favorites to date.

For decades I used to choose D'Addario, both for tone and availability. However, they tended to not last very long - extra changes for 3d string on my PSGs mainly to blame for early breakage.

Tested out a couple of SIT string sets a few years ago. They ended up in the trash after a short while because they didn't sound good to me, didn't sustain as well as I was used to, and weren't tuning-stable. Never got around to test how long they would last.

Jagwire "LG Series" strings sound good to me - almost as good as D'Addario, they are stable, and they last quite a while. One factor I see as an advantage is that they are very "tight" on changes - require less throw for a certain pitch-change.

LiveSteelStrings (custom - same gauges as the Jagwires) are more or less interchangeable with my Jagwire string sets but not quite as "tight". They are stable, and they seem to last even longer than Jagwires.

So, now it is either Jagwire or LiveSteelStrings on my PSGs. As long as I can get those I'm happy, and there's always D'Addario to fall back on even if they may not last as long as the two mentioned.

Same thing here;

I have used Ernie Ball's for years, liked them, no complaints. Purchased a few sets of SIT strings & thought the same thing as you have posted...so I guess I wasn't imagining it. They also seems to create a lot of overtones or "noise" when sliding the bar, much more than I experienced in the past.

Since so many folks have a preference for Jagwires, I think I'll give them a try out & see how I like them.

I too had problems with SIT. Back when I still had the PP Emmons, I bought some Buddy Emmons signature SIT strings. Put them on both the E9th and C6th necks. Couldn't get them to stay in tune, kept "stretching". After a week I gave up and put on what I had been using at the time, Emmons Extra Lively strings, and it was back to "normal".

A local music store sells the SIT steel guitar strings (nickel). As they were different (I thought) than the Buddy Emmons signature strings, we bought a set for a Sho-Bud Maverick that we had borrowed for my wife (to learn on). Had tuning problems with those, although some of it was probably caused because the Maverick we had did not have roller nuts.

I've used 'em all, but I found Live Steel Strings to work best on a pedal guitar. The winds on the ball end are shorter and the windings do not go over the changer finger, which brings breakage to a minimum. I change the 3rd and 5th every 5th job,
basically every week, and I change the set every 10-12 jobs depending on how lazy I am. I use stainless because they seem to stay bright longer than nickel. Plus they are good people to do business with. Very prompt.

I've tried them all too. And I think Cobra Coils are the best. They last a very long time, have a great fullness of tone, and keep their brightness longer than most of the others I've tried.

YMMV

I used George L's for years then went to Jagwire. When Jagwire became hard to get I tried Live Steel Strings.

I have not broken a string since. Live Steel Strings get my vote.

My advice try several different brands and see what works best. Also try Stainless vs Nickel. I really liked George L Stainless but I prefer Nickel in Live Steel Strings.

BTW I also use Live Steel Strings on all my 6 string electrics.

Mike, I've heard a lot of good comments on Cobra Coil but wonder if they are different now than say 10+ years ago. I friend gave me a set about 10 to 12 years ago for me to try. I took them off an hour after I put them on because they felt like spaghetti. I think Bobbye Seymour used to swear by them. Maybe I got a bad set or something. Have you ever had that problem?

My only string preference is that they MUST be stainless steel. From there I go with whatever brand I can find with the best deal. However, my longest-running favorites have been Ernie Ball singles.

I have been using Jagwire Nickel wounds since they came on the market, nothing better IMO so I will stick with them.
Have tried the Live Steels as well and they are good too but I still prefer the Jagwires Very Happy

It's hard for me to remember when I DIDN'T use GeorgeL's stainless strings, and his .155 cables either. Probably late 80's when George, Mona, Leeza, and Kim were running the product table at the steel shows.

On my Emmons guitars I use the above mentioned strings, because Emmons PPs need slight recalibration sometimes when changing string brands.

On my Infinity I'm using Sid's Live Steel Strings in stainless and enjoying those strings very much.
