Does anyone have any tips on soldering these Dunlop "Hotpotz." For some reason I'm having a hell of a job to get the solder to flow on the connecting pins. I am using an Antex 18 watt iron and traditional 60/40 lead/tin fluxed solder wire. Do you have to prepare the pins in any way? I am surprised they don't make small sockets to push over the pins. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave. |

They are a bit tricky. I managed to ruin mine. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

An 18 watt soldering iron is probably too little for that job. More like a 30 watt. I have a adjustable heat iron and find I have to up the heat for jobs such as that.
The 18 watt is OK for most printed circuit work, but with a "stud" and wire its not enough. |

Dave, here is a picture of how to fasten the wires.
Make a bend in the end of the wire and wrap around the post.
Then touch your soldering iron to the edge of the top of the post. It heats up quickly, so be careful.
I use a 25 watt iron for the volume pots that I prewire for customers.
Let me know if I can be of any service.

Dave,
The posts on the pot are already tinned, but you should flow solder on the wires before you wrap them around the posts. This will make the process go much smoother.
Always use rosin core solder, NEVER use acid core solder for electronics.

Thank you gentlemen for your replies and the picture helps a great deal Bill. I intend to get a temperature controlled iron in the next day or two so I reckon that should help. Thanks again to all. Dave. |
