According to his website and various posts on this forum, he uses either GeorgeL or Bill Lawrence pickups.

Bob is building me a flame maple and walnut 8 stringer with a George L.

His prices are very reasonable. Cool

Regarding pickups, normally any of the George L's or the Bill Lawrence 705 on the 8-string lap steels. If someone is willing to reach down deep into their wallet, then it opens up more expensive options as in these two steels:

Bob is going to work his magic on that slab of wood and make a beautiful full scale console steel for me to play on gigs . .

Assuming of course I spend a lot more time in the woodshed to sound somewhat respectable on it . . Rolling Eyes

Better keep the six string around my neck just in case . . Embarassed

I have a solid walnut, 6 string Melbert steel that I've had for quite some time. It's my favorite lap steel I've owned.

Just this week, Bob finished building me an 8 string model in solid cherry. UPS says it is to arrive Monday. I can hardly wait to get my hands on it.

In the few short years I've been playing lap steel, I've owned (bought / sold / traded) MANY, MANY, MANY lap steels. I've had entry-level budget models from Rogue, Recording King, Morrell, and no-name Asian built models.

I've had pro-level top line guitars from Sierra, Canopus, Remington. I've had vintage gear from Gibson, Rickenbacher, Supro. I've owned Blue Stars, Melobars, Guit-Steels.

In my opinion, the VALUE (what you get versus what you pay) in a Melbert steel is second to none. Excellent quality American made craftsmanship at outstanding prices.
