Hi All,
Some of you may (or may not) recall me, I am a lap steel newbie (to say the least) who restored a single neck 54 Stringmaster (the guitar that Leo never made) a few years ago.
Anyway, our band is working up Iris Dement's Our Town in A (A, D, A, E) and I've decided to try the rhythm *chords* on the Stringmaster as I currently don't have any guitars that are set up for slide work. I'm writing to ask if you have any idea for a suitable tuning for the key of A or any other helpful hints. Thanks, your help will be much appreciated.
Best regards,
Jon Bathmaker |

A6 tuning. C# E F# A C# E. Open, you have three A chord inversions. At the fifth fret, D, with same inversions of course. And at 7th fret, E chord. That tuning is low to high. Same strings as a C6 set (when ordering strings) tuned C E G A C E. That's what I'd do, in any case. _________________ ...but you are the music / while the music lasts (TS Eliot) |

Hi Peter,
That sounds pretty easy (which is important!) I'll give it a go. Thanks much.
The Stringmaster is an 8 string guit, do you have any suggestions for the other two strings?
Best,
Jon |

Looks like you would add a low F# and A. Here is a link to an 8-string set you can buy via the Forum. My lapsteels are all six string.

Love that Iris DeMent tune. Good luck with it. Nice thing about the 6th tuning(s) is that you have both major and minor chords in the straight bar position. _________________ ...but you are the music / while the music lasts (TS Eliot) |

Thanks. My guitar is now tuned to A6 and it seems OK. I had to tune down from C13 so I'm unlikely to break any strings.
Best,
Jon |
