Hey all you Fender-geeks, did Leo really make quad steels before Stringmasters??

Must have been a special order custom job by Fender or a conversion I'd say.

Looks like a Custom Triple with an extra neck added on the front. You can see that the 2 necks nearest to the player are the same height. The gap where the control panel is fitted is in the place it would be in a Custom if neck one was removed.

That's the only quad I've ever seen. Wonder what happened to it?

Great picture

Agreed. I'd say it's after-market conversion or possibly a custom factory job, which would have been extremely rare back in those days.

Looks like it has some kind of pedal conversion, see the pedal rod and extra leg… maybe a Shot job.

Hey Jussi!

Hi Blokes, apparently quads are very rare, but I found this video of Asleep at the wheel, who uses a quad.

Enjoy!

Jan, the quad in that video is a Stringmaster, not the earlier Fender steel with trapezoid pickups (like Pete Drake's quad).

The original poster was asking about the earlier Fender steels (pre-Stringmaster) and wondering if they made any quads. I've never seen or heard of any and I think Pete Drake's is an after-market creation, two D-8's joined, or possibly a factory one-off.

Ok, I accept. I did not know the difference.

I just liked the video with a four neck steel.

I never saw one like that with the red buttons.

The red buttons must be an owner modification. The original buttons tend to gum up and stick after a while, and a lot of players didn't like the buttons. I saw one recently with 4 toggle switches instead of the buttons, another owner mod. The blue one looks like a "player" guitar, a workhorse... refinished and showing some wear.

When chatting up Eddie Rivers after a show, he mentioned that blue quad did some time with the Bob Wills band, he hinted it had some interesting history!
