Anyone still using the Peavey Scorpion speakers?
If so, did you experience a "break-in" period?
I understand they were quite popular at one time. It is about 9 lbs. for the 12"...not as light as the neo-speakers, but not a heavey-weight either. 800 watts peak, 400 watts programed, and 200 watts continuous...whatever all that means. |

I can't see the scorpion being popular for clean use, they're great rock and roll, but they break up easy. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Best term that I can use to describe the tone of these speakers is "nasal sounding, very thin"! As Lane stated, not ideal for a warm, clean sound. |

Years ago, I was using my '56 Pro Amp for Tele. I was afraid of blowing up the original Jensen 15, so I built a sub-baffle board, and put in a 12" Scorpion Plus. A match made in sonic Heaven! Friends constantly borrowed it for studio work in Cleveland and Akron. Although I use my Dr. Z Prescription most often, that old Fender is still a killer! _________________ Dr. Z Surgical Steel amp, amazing!

'63 Fingertip S-10, at James awaiting 6 knees
'57 Strat, LP Blue
'91 Tele with 60's Maple neck
Dozen more guitars!
Dozens of amps, but SF Quad reverb, Rick Johnson cabs. JBL 15, '64 Vibroverb for at home.

I've got a Peavey Bandit 50W bought used, and it came with a Scorpion. In that amp at least, I like the voicing, nice and clear but the highs don't get so brittle as they can in some more 'high end' speakers, a BW included. My tastes, YMMV... _________________ Lost Pines Studio

Not going by spec. sheets but simply speaking from experience; Replaced the stock Scorpion in a Peavey "Special' with a BW 1203 and the improvement in tone was substantial to my ears! The bass in particular became much smoother and more pronounced. The BW seemed to turn a so-so amp into a very good pedal steel amp..JMO,YMMV! |

I used the stock Scorpion for 10 years in my PV Special 112 very clean balanced sound .recently replaced it with a n EPS-12 to save some weight. Marginal improvement in sound. cant comment on break-in as the amp was old whenI got it. _________________ Dave O'Brien

I used a Peavey Classic Chorus 2x12 with scorps for my early steel learnimg days. It was not good. Haha. Thin and wayy too crisp and hollow sounding for steel. Had a lot of bite.
Bought a Heritage VTX with Scorpions that I never did try for steel ...was part of my six string road rig... now has a broken cone.... might dig it out of storage and see what it sounds like after a decade of rest. |
