Hey everyone! I'm really excited about this track. It's not mixed and edited, but it's one of my favorite tracks that we recorded earlier this month. I'm not going to keep it up for long, so check it out and let me know if it's SGF approved!
This is called Ugly Beauty -- Monk's only waltz. The song features a few short solos: first bass, then Hammond organ and finally steel. We recorded live. Unfortunately, this file I uploaded is mono, so you won't be able to experience the beautiful stereo Leslie sound here.

Thanks for all the nice comments and for listening. Not sure when the record will be released--probably closer to the target date of September, maybe a little sooner. Still have some recording, artwork, editing, mixing, mastering, etc. to do.
I think everything I play is just recycled from other things I've heard along the way--it just comes out differently. Fortunately for me, I've listened to an ungodly amount of music and paid close attention. My wife is also quite the enabler.
In the end, just play it the way you hear it. If you need to, ask yourself "what would ________ (fill in the blank with the name of the player you want to invoke) play here?" Works for me all the time. In the case of Ugly Beauty, a few nights before the session I had no idea what to play. Then I asked myself, "What would Joe Zawinul play here?" That got the ball rolling. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

The interplay between the Hammond and Steel is wonderful -- there are some magical moments in the spaces where they meet and part ways. |

Thanks for the little preview. It's sounding great! Very cool to hear the steel as part of an ensemble in such an arrangement. I feel like this will be groundbreaking work. |

Kirk, I've always played this game with myself, especially as a guitarist. I've been into using my impressions of other players as a springboard for my own ideas. In other words, the lines are all mine, but I approached with the attitude or sound or intensity as something I recall from that player. In this case Joe's playing on A Remark You Made is one of, if not my favorite, solos I've ever heard. I simply tried to channel it without copying it. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |
