Just a thought... I sometimes see old Mavericks[[ the "good ones" raised maple neck, looks like a real steel]on ebay pretty cheap... I wonder what it would cost to upgrade one to close to ProI specs.. Double/or Triple R/L changer,4 knees maybe 2 extra pedals... probably more than buying a real Bud I imagine???... just wondering out loud to guys like Ricky or Bobbe who know Buds and what [and WHO] are available to help out with such an endevour... it'll probably NOT happen but I've long thought about it if I can find a clean "good Maverick cheap... No contact paper guitars need apply! bob

Your looking at a ball-park between 700-1000 bucks to do what you described.

Ricky..Thats actually better than I thought, but after paying $600 for the Maverick..... I think I'll just pass on this idea. You can Get a "REAL" Bud for less than that by far... bob

Bob- I have rebuilt hundreds of Mavericks over the years and have very good results. I convert to a Super Pro type changer w/drop on 2-4-8- w 3floor and 4 knees. The cost range is usually around $300 ex change w/old parts.Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works.

I agree with Ed on this.
Changer would be the most expensive part....IF you buy every part brand new!!!
If you put in a new changer I would go for a triple raise double lower.
My 2 cents

Bob,it can be done but you're probably better off passing the Maverick along and picking up a nice single neck. They are plentiful. Just on E-bay alone there is 2 or 3 nice looking singles and several D-10 Sho-Buds. The cabinets are made heavier on the standard singles than on a Maverick.

99% of the time I use Sho-Bud Triple raise and Double lower on the 2-4-8-. That way you pretty much can do all you want. As stated - it would cost a lot for all new changer assembly. Most people "Upgrade" their Maverick, then later move on to a D-10 and keep the Maverick as a backup Guitar. Ed

Roger- I somewhat disagree with you about Maverick bodies. They are 3/4 Maple the same as on all other Sho-Buds. Also the narrow width ads more strength . The newer "Fender" Mavericks lacked the raised neck, but it had very little to do with the overall strength. The old PRO 1 probably was the strongest Sho-Bud.If you add a new George L Pickup you really have a great sounding as well as playing guitar. GUYS.. I don't even HAVE a Maverick!.. I was just wondering out loud, because the old"good" Mavericks seem to go for the same money or less than the wall paper models! The ones I've seen looked like they could be nice sturdy great sounding/looking LIGHTWEIGHT vintage steel with the right undercarriage!.. I guess I'm starting to get gassed for that old "Bud" sound again. I had some of my best tone ever on a crusty 1965 Bud... and I'll never get that tone out of my skull. It can't be re created by a modern guitar IMHO.... bob

Hello Bob,at the risk of getting into a war, don't even fool with the maverick!I'm sho-bud to the bone.LOVE EM,best sound i ever had professional,1970,friends still talk about the sound i used to have!as a mechanic told me one time, the more you soup, the more you walk!i had a 57chevy.very dependable, well, started to change things.rebore 327,cams,ect.couldn't get home without break down!i'm now back to old SHO-BUD professional made in early 70s.just can't beat that sound.i know the mechanics on the new guitars are greater. But what about the sounds?get you a old- bud,you want ever be sorry!!!ask Ricky Davis, farris

The Maverick had the same changer parts as all other Sho-Bud,but minus the lowering section. The real weak part was the "Coathangers" used to pull changer parts. Some early Mavericks did not have roller bridges. I still contend a Maverick with a good Pickup will hold it's own sound wise. Answer this- If they were so bad why were so many sold??ED

Farris-The End castings for Sho-Bud were all made at the same place. The only difference was the Maverick weren't polished.I never said I used adjustable legs in the $300 price. But for $25 more I use them in the back. I also use chrome steel legs. If you will send your address I will send some photos of some conversions I have done. Ed

IMO these Sho-Buds were great starter steels back then.Nothing wrong with the cabinet.Nothing wrong with the changer like Ed said.A Maverick could be easly adjusted to a ProI model if one would like too.Non adjustable legs is one of the minor problems.
I think that 60 or 70% of the members on this forum started on a Maverick. So did I.
300.00 could do the Job.
Like Ed said before....Used parts will be good enough for such a job.
I would never use new parts to fix up a Maverick.
When you do use new parts you will need as much as Ricky D said....approx $600

Example:A changer unit T/D cost around $65 Canadian Dollars.
Knee levers kits left and right are $240 Canadian Dollars.
Adjustable legs are $195 Canadian Dollars.

Totals up to $500 Canadian Dollars.
Make that American currency and you will have to pay $450USD.

So used parts will be much cheaper then that. But if you could buy a used Maverick from a friend for let say $300 and you add $450 then you will have a nice steel for $750.And you have a steel with a great sound.

Bob:

Good topic ... I'm glad you posted it for discussion. I have an old Maverick that served me well for many nights/years. It has been in the closet for some time now-replaced by a LDG. In my case, an upgrade might make sense - it would sure be easier to move to gigs when my old back is acting up! Looking back,it amazes me that the Maverick held-up as well as it did ---- considering how much abuse I put it through!
