I suppose I might as well post this here as anywhere. The first measure is an exercise that Jim Loessberg suggests, and I have expanded it into a scale exercise. (It assumes you can lower string 6 a half step - I think most folks can.)
Obviously you can start on any fret, and if you wanted to be truly thorough you could start on each in turn. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

I have revised the exercise I posted above. Alternating the thumb with either finger is a pretty natural motion as the digits are opposed; but alternating 1 & 2 I'm finding harder so I've rewritten it to give them more of a workout.
