Here are some photos. from the Non-Pedal Steel Guitar Summit, held at Gryphon String Instuments in Palo Alto on 1st May, 2016; organised very successfully by Larry Chung, through the hospitality of Frank Ford. The meeting was a great success, and a womderful opportunity to meet and play with old friends, and new friends whom we'd only previous interacted with via this Forum. The rooms were filled with vintage steel guitars, most of which were set up for visitors to play.
All of the following photographs were taken by me using a Fuji W3 Stereoscopic (3D) Digital Camera, which simultaneously takes 3D and "flatty" images. What you see below are one-eyed photos, that is, one side of the stereo pair.
For those of you who are able to view stereoscopic images, I have posted the 3D versions of these photographs, as anaglyphs, at..

To view these you will need red/cyan glasses.

Cool Pictures!! Looks like a really fun event. Glad to see one of my heroes there, Mr. Bobby Black. What a wonderful guy and a great friend.

We were very lucky to get him, and he seems to have recovered well from his recent automobile accident.
His playing was first rate, as you would expect.
It was an honour to be photographed with him. |

Thanks for posting all of these, Alan. Now I REALLY wish I could have been there, but I was sending good vibes down the coast from Vancouver Island. Maybe next year.
And huge thanks to Larry for what must have been a lot of work to put it together. _________________ David K |

Great job on the photos Alan!
Of course I have to chuckle about the "action" shots - classic among steel players, always looking down and appearing very serious.
If you don't play these things or have little or no clue about them, folks who would look at said photos must scratch their heads and think, "what is with these people anyway?"
And regarding one of our esteemed guests, though I'm no spring chicken, my wife has been in love "with an older man" for years - Mr. Bobby Black! _________________ Mark |

I'm jealous of all you folks who have met Todd Clinesmith. He's been my main dude for a few years and I've never met the man!
We should have one of these in New York. There is a unique collection of instruments here, although the Bigsbys seem to mostly be out west. Maybe another NYC Lap Steel Festival. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Great photos Alan. When I first saw the 3D versions it made me think of Floyds "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast". 🥳 |

We'll have to do another one when the plague has passed. Bobby is still playing and many of the folks featured in the photos are active as always.
Thanks, Alan, for reminding us all of the great event. It was very gratifying to see and meet so many talented players and folks.
We did another folow-up event featuring Jeremy Wakefield and Russ Blake and Pete Grant, too, which was also at Gryphon in Palo Alto. Bill Asher was there as was John Munnerlyn. I'm sure I'm forgetting lots of other important folks, too, but what fun.
Best,

I was at the event in 2016 and enjoyed it even though I didn't play lap steel back then. Now that I've got an Asher Electro Hawaiian Jr, I'll probably enjoy it even more! |
