I have found the best way for me to learn a song is to refer to the Sheet Music and take some time to get the notes right. It ends up more accurate to the melody also...for me.
I play "My Way" with no back up on my clip and no fills. All melody as written. I like to play the song as the singer would sing it in other words. Sometimes embellishing takes away from the melody line. It gives one the opportunity to concentrate on expressing the song as the composer intended.
Good practice too. What are your thoughts on this?

I agree, Roy. I try to play melodies exactly as written. Of course, there's a time for improvisation too... after the melody has been established. But some players embellish the melody so much, the song is unrecognizable. I remember listening to a certain unnamed steel guitarist's CD a few years ago and wondering why the songs I was hearing did not match the titles on the song list! His "San Antonio Rose" was so cluttered with additional notes and licks from start to finish, the melody was all but gone. As a listener that is very frustrating to me. Nice job on the Sinatra song, Roy!

Roy,
I totally agree. Get the melody down first and then take it from there. A song is more than licks. Rolling Eyes
