With great trepidation (thousands of LPs and cassettes potentially to digitize) I'm having trouble getting a strong enough signal from the turntable (Stanton) -> receiver (modern; no phono input) -> Mackie 402VLZ3 mixer -> MacPro (Audacity).
I've put the turntable plugs into CD and (one other --Video?) inputs and the signal barely registers on the mixer. Selecting either Tuner or Tape on the receiver delivers plenty of signal.
Do I need to dust off an old early '90s receiver with a Phono input? (Retired because stereo outputs differed significantly, left to right.) _________________ "Gopher, Everett?" |

You need a phono preamp (RIAA) to get the levels up and frequency curves correct. Quite a wide spread in quality and price for such preamps on the market, but even the weakest and cheapest ones are better than none.
Suggest you start looking around by checking out these for a suitable unit...

Thanks for the info, gents.
Just for academic purposes, would a receiver with a dedicated Phono input boost the signal adequately (i.e., to the same level as Tuner, Tape, etc. sources)?
That asked, it's probably worth the price of a phono preamp not to have change out receivers. _________________ "Gopher, Everett?" |

I just went through this a couple of months ago. Those fella's in the computer section of the forum were sure helpful to me. After trying a couple out, I ended up buying the Rolls unit. It sounded best to me. Works like a champ for me. Hope this helps out some Ben.

I use one of these I got at a garage sale for $5. The amp itself is trashy, but the RIAA preamp is wonderful and has no hiss at all. There is a tape out plug on the back that puts out just the right level.
