Many of you may have seen my post earlier about a friend of mine who retired from picking (he is 84), gave me his 1989 Original Zumsteel D10. I was so humbled.
Well it had not been played in 8-9 years and sat uncovered in his music room (temperature controled basement). Needless to say, it was gummed up to a point that it could not be played.
I wanted to set it up like mine, so Bruce Zumsteg supplied me with the needed parts for this.
I took this steel down to the body and crossrods and begin this project.
Only having a few hours each week to work on this, it took me 3 weeks to complete and get adjusted.
I did put on a new set of Lawrence 705's, but am not sure they are exactly right for this steel. I may go back to single coil pickups. (Your thoughts?)
Here are some pictures:
(I guess now it is time to do the same thing to my 93 Emmons LeGrande)
I am anxious to take this baby on a gig and put it to the test.
Thanks for looking |

Nice Bill and I have rebuilt several guitar and that not an easy task. As far as pickup you mentioned, I have owned several Zum steels and found that on all, I preferred the single coil pickups. I don't remember if they were True Tones or Bruce's single coil but they just sounded better to my ear. Gave the guitar more body and Zing is the word I use. _________________ Henry Matthews

more power to you. mine needs it but i'm too
busy to get that involved yet.
the best thing i ever did was put some old
70's single coil emmons pickups on mine. 19k
very similar to the stock zums but a tad sweeter and clearer. |

Looks good! F
As for pickups, my Zum came with E-66es.
I now have a Truetone on the the E9th neck and and a Tonealigner on the C6th. I am delighted with both. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Bill, Telonics 409 pickups work great with Zums. Well worth trying. |

Great work.
Looks a lot like mine.
I've never liked anything but my single coils on my Zum.. _________________ Kevin Raymer

Bill, your friend was very generous, and you really honored your friendship by breathing life back into this beautiful Zum. It looks great. I didn't see the previous thread. Maybe you can share the link if it's handy. I'd love to know his reaction. |
