I posted this question in the Alumatone post, but I think it will have got lost because it was off subject. So here goes again: Does anybody know if a Telonics 409 wide mount will fit an older, 1982 Zum? I asked Dave Beaty at the Dallas show and he said no problem. However, I FORGOT TO TELL HIM MY GUITAR IS OLD. I can contact Bruce Zumsteg to see if the pickup mouning changed over the years, but I sort of hate to bother him in his retirement.

Has anybody changed out a Zum pickup for a 409? What were the results? I am not a big fan of humbuckers. My single coil is pretty bright. I wouldn't mind loosing some highs and have a little more gutsy sound. I think a 409 might to that, but not sure.

Thanks.

George, I have just fitted a 409 to my Zum hybrid. Very simple easy job with no issues. The 409 is the best pickup currently available, just the best. Paddy long has them on both his Zums and is very happy with their performance. You won't be disappointed with the 409 pickup, another top shelf product from Dave Beaty and his team.

George, that was my old Zum in the other thread. It had a Geo L's pickup when I got it. See the threaded posts in this photo. [This one just happens to be a narrow mount, but they're the same either style]

In the other thread, you can see there were 2 holes drilled in the pickup plate. That was for those screws to poke through so that the pickup would sit flat on the plate.

Other than that, and assuming the Telonics units are flat on the bottom and about the same dimensions as the Geo. L's, you shouldn't expect any troubles mounting their pickup in your old Zum.

The problem arose due to the design, non-standard width and height of the Alumitones on my Zum.

I don't think you would experience that with any of the conventional design pickups.

I defer to Dave of course, but I think they will mount just fine in your guitar.

George,

If Dave says it works, I'd go for it. I put a 409 in my Zum, and it sounds fantastic.

I may be mistaken , but last time I called Bruce he was very happy to help with parts or advice, he's retired from taking orders on new steels, but I think he would gladly help with answering a question. That's the impression I got.

Get that 409, you will be very happy with it.

Best of luck with the project.
