I have a GFI SM-10 and I find the sound somewhat saturated at times. I'm by no means an expert but it would seem by looking at it that the pickup may be too close to the strings. What would you recommend for distance from the pickup to the strings or is it trial and error?

i'd try moving it to different distances and see which you like best.
usually, up close will be a little stronger and fatter and further away will be lighter and thinner.
it's personal preference. whichever works best for the way you pick.

Everyone says two quarters' thickness (3.5mm), but I find saturation still can happen there.
Sound is clearer and warmer at 5.25mm (3 quarters)

personally, 3 quarters seems like a very long distance to me.
my guitars have all been kept much closer to one quarter with no problems. i like the sound. for 35+ years and my pickups are all around 19-20k ohms.

Perhaps you don't hit hard as others? I have to use input 2 on almost every amp I own when I'm at 3.5mm (the US quarter is 1.75mm),and even then get saturated transients.

maybe my dead strings and junky steel and amps allow it. i pick pretty hard. 10k pedal. recordings sound pretty clean to me...usually direct to board.
maybe it's your 'trucker touch'.. Very Happy

Truckers Touch brings up the question, not counting all you pro pickers and musicians, which career options spawn the best steel players.

White collar, Blue, Trucker, Shrimp Boat Captain, Golfer, Doctor, Lawyer, Engineer, etc...

Maybe my next move is, career change. Lol!
