OK, I'll ask. Are those lap steels they're holding, or did they actually make instruments in that shape with conventional round necks? Sure looks like chords they're holding.

Those look very similar to (but not exactly) like '30s Epiphone Electar steels. Perhaps they're homemade copies? I doubt they were actually played Spanish guitar style even if they do seem to be holding chords in the pic.
