Hey guys, didn't have time to demo the Mini 101, but I've been using it regularly lately so I thought I'd post an update. Also, we did a TV shoot recently where I used the Mini 101 with both pedal steel and lap steel. The music starts at 8:00 in the program. Unfortunately, the songs are constantly interrupted by the interview bits, but still some good stuff in there I think. This is not straight up country, but more songwriter folk music along the lines of Ray Lamontagne, Neil Young, etc. Lap steel solo starts around 19:40.

As far as the Mini 101 goes, I still love it. For double duty with guitar, I find that I need to tame both the mids and the highs when I switch to pedal steel, but so many factors are at play there, like guitar I use (this week-end it's a Strat) and the speaker. In the video, I'm pretty sure I had my EPS-15C cabinet. |

Best settings for clean are:
Gain: 1 to 3
Tri-Q: All the way to the left
Voice: Surf
Hi Cut: Straight up (or roll it to the left if it's too bright)
Master: 50W
I did not find the 101 to be a good choice for steel guitar. |

My settings vary depending on the room and the situation. Notice that in this video, the drummer uses brushes and the room is tiny, so I'm probably at 4W! I have never even tried anything past 25W, usually 10 is plenty, but I rarely play in a situation where there is no PA. I played a large auditorium this weekend and my master was set between 2w and 10w, but closer to 2. It's plenty loud for me to hear it, and the P.A. takes care of the rest.
My gain is always somewhere between 3 and 4. Surf. For Tri-Q, I like it at noon or a bit less. I find that all way to the left doesn't leave enough meat on the bone. But again, the room and the musical context will dictate the settings.
The key to a clean sound might be the speaker. I use either the EPS-15 or the EPS-12 but I'm hoping to try a Travis Toy model soon. I also use a Hilton volume pedal, and that surely helps keeping a completely clean sound with lots of headroom. Those might be things to considered if you get distortion past 2 on the gain dial. Mine stays clean until about 5.
The rocking lap steel sound is most likely from a ZVEX Box of Rock pedal. |

Hey Alex, I have followed the reviews of Quiter 101 amps posted here in the Electronics section. I believe I purchased a Stringmaster from you about 3 years ago, cool guitar!
Anyway... I purchased a 101 mini head and paired it with a 15" JBL K130 4 ohm speaker mounted in a pine, open back cabinet. I added a Holy Grail Neo Reverb unit, hooked thru the effects loop.
I mainly play a 1978 Emmons S-10, with a stock single coil pickup.
I am very happy with the setup, nice clean tones on the Surf setting, and plenty of power for smaller gigs dialed at the 10 watt setting. My bandmates all were very impressed with my tone, and I feel the same way. YMMV....
