So I was bumping along with my Fender 400 and custom copedent all fat, dumb, and happy...when I started a thread asking how other players work with E9 http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=299693 (something I've never gotten the hang of). Needless to say, a lot of people posted some fascinating insights into the tuning I hadn't considered before (how could I ignore a tuning sometimes called "The Mozart Neck" )
At the same time, I posted a request on the tablature forum for some Jerry Garcia stuff and got much more than I thought would be available. Of course, it was all in E9 which presented a major dilemma. I love my custom copedent Fender 400 and have plans to really explore it's capabilities...but...at the same time it would be a blast to learn some old Garcia stuff. Even though the Fender 400's are simple to tune and setup, I just couldn't imagine going through that every time I wanted to change to E9 and back...so...I came to the same conclusion that decades of PSG players before me did...I need a 2nd neck!
I started looking around and being an 8 string guy thought it would be tough to find something that would work for me at the right price...but I found the perfect instrument yesterday and pulled the trigger. It's a custom designed 8 string/3 pedal/1 knee that is actually a hybrid of sorts. It's a cable pull that converts to a rod system near the bridge. I've been studying some Garcia tabs and his playing was pretty basic from a pedal/lever standpoint so a 3 & 1 should work just fine...if not, my experience adding knee levers to my 400 should make a similar operation pretty simple on this new one. Should get here in a week or so...here's some shots...
Oh ya, and Thanks Steel Guitar Forum and those who post for making it so easy to get inspired by this amazing instrument

An Overfelt, right? Nice simple mechanism, looks smooth. I'd be interested in your impressions.
Good choice for a few hundred bucks. |

Dennis,
Great looking guitar, but where's the output jack? I see the wire coming from the pickup, but don't see a jack on the end, top, bottom, front or back. Might it be hidden by the pedal-adjuster knob?

I have been looking at the Overfelt guitars for awhile on EBay. I, too, would like to know about how it sounds and plays. If it is ok, that brand may become a good starter instrument. I hope it all works out.........I wish you well on this.

I think I see it hiding underneath the tuning wrench in the last photo.

John,
I believe you're correct. It appears on my monitor to be black rather than the usual chrome look. Maybe just my eyes.

Ya, pretty crazy huh
Hey Lane, according to the seller it's setup in E9...don't know yet if it's the upper or lower 8 strings of the 10 string E9 though. The 3 pedals make the standard E9 changes and the knee lever drops E to Eb.
Just checked out an Overfelt 6 string and it certainly looks like it was made by the same guy...same finish and graphics. Never heard of this model before, but the seller (and sole owner) told me it was built by a veteran and the Overfelt 6 string I found says the same thing so it must be a match.
The guy I bought from says he gave pedal steel a try but couldn't get anywhere so I'm thinking this thing has never been out of his studio...very excited about this find! _________________ Hear my latest album, "Celestial" featuring a combination of Mullen SD12 and Synthesizers:

Hi Bob,
this specific one is actually a different configuration. It's currently tuned to the lower 8 of a 10 string E9 and has 3 pedals and 1 knee. I was wondering if you could tell me more about the changer/bridge you used on this. Was it an aftermarket piece or did you put it together from the ground up yourself. Also what kind of pickup did you use?
Thanks!

This is getting interesting, particularly since I dreamed of an 8 string psg last night.
My six-string has the same compass, lo B to hi G#.
With eight, you can pick several ranges for the 8 strings.
I think I'd go with low B, no D, and include the hi D#. Just musing.... |

After really diving into the mechanism of this guitar, I realized that it's not currently easy to reconfigure to anything other than it's original setup. It's hard-built to play the lower 8 strings of the 10 string standard E9 copedent and I'm going with the higher 8...so...time to do some redesign and drilling of the changer arms. Also planning to do a complete refinish as well.
Honestly, I paid way too much for this guitar so am disappointed in myself...but...I wanted a 2nd 8 string to setup to E9 and this guy fit the bill. Wasn't planning on having to alter the changers but it is what it is...as Jerry Garcia sang, "Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile."
