I have a 1983 Zumsteel and in the past couple of weeks when I depress foot pedal #2 on my E9th neck does not seem to be returning to the open position. I have used liquid cleaners to remove possible built up oil/grease and then re-oiled it with a light oil, but it still does not seem to be returning to the proper open position. Are there any plastics or rollers inside of changers that can wear to the point of needing replacement? I am not savvy on changers, but it appears I need to become literate on them. Anyone have a suggest regarding my problem, also, is anyone aware where I can see a diagram showing how changers are constructed? All positive input is appreciated.

I would check for free operation of the P2 cross rod before I did much more.

Loosen the tuning nuts.
Check that the pedals are loose on the axle on the pedal bar.
Check that the cross-shafts rotate freely in their bushings.
Check that the pullrods move freely both in the combs and the holes in the scissors.
As you've been oiling it, you HAVE been including the pivot rivets?

as Lane says, back off the hex nuts first. this is rule #1.

Please do not add any more lube at this time. You have to understand the CAUSE first.

When was the guitar working fine, as it should ?

What changed since then ? New string, new strings, re-tune ? same string gauges ?

The B pedal pulls strings 6 and 3 so back off both of those. If you have a knee lever that lowers 6, also back that off.

tune both 6 and 3 to natural open pitch. Then tune string 6 to the A tone with the B ped depressed...is all well ?

If so go ahead and tune the 3rd string to the A tone with the B Ped depressed ?

is all well ?

advise....

Hi, All,

This is a very frustrating issue, as you feel like all you do is tune.

Lane and Tony are spot on. I am new to the PSG, and have had the same issue, twice. After loosening up the problematic strings and hex nuts, then re-tuning, I still had some issues. Long story short, I have learned that when this happens, it is time for new strings.

Good Luck!

Lynn

Kenny, am I missing something?? Since you live one hour from the guy who built your machine, why not just get on the phone and give him a jingle. I am sure he can diagnose your problem on the phone.

Also, if all else fails - check the "pull helper springs". If they are too tight they may be interfering with a normal changer finger return after pedal raise.

They are the springs which are attached to the white plastic beaded strips. If you grab the white plastic cord you can decrease spring tension by pulling it tight, then allowing it to slip to the next looser bead
