In another thread (any many before), I see strings 1 & 2 labeled "re-entrant strings". How did this term come into being. I can not find any definition when I Goolge Re-entrant (or reentrant) that could really describe this situation. Just curious how it came to be. We all know that we used to call them "chromatic strings", and that was a misnomer.

Reentrant is the common term for any tuning with strings "out of order."

I get annoyed when people refer to them as "chromatic strings" and when people spell "re-entrant" without the hyphen.

Me to. While they do make it easier to play chromatically, especially with all the knee lever change options we have. Chromatic's they're not.

But D# and F# are diatonic, and not chromatic in E.

But E9 is not diatonic in E.

Re-entrant seems safer.

Thanks Lane. I didn't add 'tunings' to my search, so that page didn't come up. Had no idea it was a real term.
