I am going to attempt a vertical lever installation to lower my 5 & 10 strings on my D-10 HWP. never done this before, so can anyone post a pic of their vertical 5 & 10 string lower on a RP or HWP or pre-RP on the left knee? I need to know the position of the lever & the stop on the undercarriage; also where & how to mount the cross-shaft.
Also...can this be done without disassembly of the undercarriage; like a bolt on installation?
Or is there anyone within a few hours drive of me (West central Florida) that is able to do this installation? I would rather pay someone who knows what he is doing that try to do it myself, perhaps Martin Weenick (lost your number) but I am hesitant to ship my guitar cross-country. Thank you. _________________ A couple D-10s,some vintage guitars & amps, & lotsa junk in the gig bag. |

If you order the kit from Mike at Mullen, it will be a straightforward assembly. The cross shaft is split and comes in 2 pieces with a screw to attach them. Just tell the folks at Mullen what you are doing and they will supply all the parts you need.
I know this because I installed the very same vertical KL kit on my PRP Mullen.
Just lay out all the parts on the underside, using the new pull rods and cross shaft to define the length and KL position, for dry fit first. Then mark and drill the body for the parts.
Be careful not to drill through the body, put a piece of tape on your drill bit to indicate depth so that you don't go too deep.
If you have basic skills, use caution and take your time, you can do it.
If you don't feel comfortable with it, farm it out to someone else.
Sorry, I don't have a pic or a Mullen to take a shot of anymore, but hopefully someone else will. You can search the forum here and I'm sure you will find a photo of a Mullen that will show the VKL.

Instead of a piece of tape, I take an MSA pull-pin and lock it on the drill bit sideways. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

You can use whatever you want, but a piece of blue painters tape is cheap, easy to wrap around the bit for a depth indicator and easy to see. The important thing is to know when to stop drilling. |

BTW, your body is already drilled for the cross shaft and the kit will come with the bushings etc., so it's a pretty easy install. When you lay out all the parts, you'll see how it all goes together. |

"BTW, your body is already drilled for the cross shaft..."
So just to be clear, with his guitar there should be no drilling required? |

Didn't say that. Body was worked for cross shafts on mine. Still have to attach lever stop bracket and, if I remember correctly, bushing plate on rear apron. They might already be marked, I have forgotten. What drilling there is, is minimal but I just wanted to caution about drilling through the finish or mica. It happens if one doesn't measure and mark the thickness.
The folks at Mullen can advise on what needs to be done if one orders the kits from them. |

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am going to order the parts, and hopefully I will see how it all lays out. I just keep thinking the old adage..measure twice;drill once!
If I have a problem, I will post some pics & go from there. _________________ A couple D-10s,some vintage guitars & amps, & lotsa junk in the gig bag. |
