HELP PLEASE How do you tie a dobro strap?

Well, I've decided to bite the bullet and play my Dobro standing up.

So, I bought a strap and I can't figure out where to tie (and loop?) the top around the head.

I have a round neck (Custom Wood 90) and no matter where I put it it's either in the way of my left hand (by the nut) or the tuners.

I give up - what's the secret?

If your Dobro has a slotted headstock, tie your strap in the slot between the tuning keys. This seemed to work good for me!!

Try looping it around the peg broad, under the strings near the nut, (if not slots). Put the knot on the underside so as not to pull on the bass strings. It should pull from the bottom side.

Several companies make an "adapter" or "extension" that loops around the peghead at the nut, for use with a conventional strap. Martin's is leather, I think, and D'Addario's is elastic. I have a Levy x-long Dobro strap with Chicago screws that attaches to the peghead the same way. When I tied the strap righ at the nut, is was hopelessly in the way. Now I tie it further away from the nut, between the 2nd and 3rd tuners. Yes, it interferes with the tuners, but now it's playable. Look at photos of Uncle Josh, etc. -- that's how most of the old-timers did it, too.

Yes, I find that tying it behind the nut gets
in the way of 1st fret playability and between the tuners really puts a kink on using *them*. I guess time will sort this out but the 1st fret issue doesn't seem to be *too* bad. It sure is nice standing up, though now I can look like I'm having the good time that I am!

Tried all the above at various times but finally installed a button screw to the bottom of the neck where it is attached to the body. Sounds strange, but by looping the strap around your right arm you keep the guitar flat and have the entire neck free of obsruction. This attachment also does away with all the stress on the neck caused by attaching the strap to the nut or tuning head area. www.genejones.com
