Could someone tell me what the allen head screws behind the strings are for. When I got this guitar they were adjusted by someone that should not have had a wrench in his hand. I think they can stop the string from lowering but I don't know why. I need to know how to adjust them. thanks Winston May

Winston, those screws are to adjust final lower on strings that split a note that is both lowered and raised at the same time such as the 6th. string raised to A with a pedal and lowered to F# at the same time.

Tune that split note, G, with the nylon tuner like you would with a lower, then use the split screw there that you describe on the neck end to tune the F# when it's just lowered with the lever only.

I have a sheet of specs here somewhere I can send you if you need it.

All those screws can act as final lower stops. They won't let the lowers go any further than their position as you have found out.

There is more Derby stuff here in the link that Dick Sexton posted in this thread. Cheers. JO. http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=298539&highlight=

Here's another couple of pages on splits that I don't see on Dick's pages. Our old buddy Boogie wrote this up for Charlie.

I'd be happy to photocopy it and mail it to you if you like. You can PM me your address if so.

[Edit: Wiped here and added to Dick's files.]

Winston, It takes a little time to understand the split screws but they are a good thing to have and you will eventually understand them. I love those Derbys. RP

The forum is such an amazing resource. In Dick Sexton's link there are five pages, including "Page Two" about fine tuning the lowers with the Allen head screws on Derby changers. Where is Page One ? Answer - at least for me - missing for quite some time. Now with Jerry Overstreet's photo image, Page One and Page Two can be read together.

My guitar developed a problem with the lowers that I had to solve by adjusting one of these screws. I found out about it last year, but I wish I had known earlier. In my case it turned out that over a period of time, a couple of the screws had moved on their own, apparently with instrument vibration, stomping the pedals, swaying and engaging the levers, normal movements happening in the course of playing the guitar, the screws moved and needed adjustment. So all I knew was the 8th string E lower wouldn't go down all the way, and for 2 days I went crazy trying to adjust with the nylon tuner and looking at the underside from all angles. Why only the lowers? I couldn't figure it out !!

I wish I had had the information from this thread last year. Dick Sexton's thread provided additional rodding information and had Page Two about the lowers. Now finally I get to read Page One, which Jerry Overstreet has copied for us here.

Thanks to Jerry and thanks once again to the Forum.

Well, there's this new G2 I've been wanting.... Laughing

Glad to be of help. I figure I owe you one. I'm still lamenting the lousy signal I sent you at one of the Lexington Classic shows. I'm sure it must have been frustrating trying to get a feed off that.

See you around sometime I hope. Take Care.

kind of surprising that everyone isn't already aware of split tuning. it's been tha biggest steel guitar news since the '80s. you'd think in 18 years of frequenting the forum, everyone would learn about it through osmosis at least.

I just want to take a moment to thank Jerry Overstreet for sending me the "Fine Tuning Info" on the Derby steels. It was the pages I have been missing from my file on my One Drive listed in this thread.

Thank you Jerry, much appreciated...

I have up loaded the pages and they should now be available to all Derby players by clicking on this link:

No problem Dick. Thank the folks at Derby and Boogie Sherrard for writing them up and making sure I had a copy when I got my Derby.

Charlie had all this stuff in his head of course, but he was a lot smarter than me. Laughing

Dick, check out those perfect corners on that Derby pad in winston's photo. Winking
