I recently acquired a 1948 Gibson ES-150 (with a p90) that I'm in love with. When I double on steel/guitar, I've been running into an a/b box with my stringmaster, & running them into the same amp. I'm happy with both tones, but the stringmaster sounds a little thinner than the Gibson with the same amp settings. (I've been using little one-channel amps.) It got me thinking, does a Gibson console grande have a similar output & tone to an Es-150? Do any of you actually have both to compare?

Can anyone compare the sound of a console grande to a stringmaster? Is it similar to the difference in tone between a les Paul & a strat? (I know that's simplifying things, but I'm just trying to get an idea of whether it's worth buying another instrument, before I drop the $.)

I've never had the pleasure to compare a pair like that, but the Console Grand voicing would be far closer to the Es-150 than a Stringmaster. The Console Grand pickup has a short and wide coil like a P90, though uses Alnico magnets for pole pieces rather than the steel screws of a P90. In fact, that basic coil design used in the Grand and other early Gibson "race track" oval picups were the basis of the P90 as we know it today.

Wouldn't it make more sense to get a two channel amp and EQ the ES-150 and Stringmaster separately, as required? I think you'd have a lot better luck with that than trying to find two guitars that use the same EQ. If you're married to your single channel amp, try an EQ stomp box on one of your guitars before it goes into the AB box.
But what the heck, if you're jonesing for a Gibson Console, go for it!

You're right, probably easier and cheaper to use a pedal or different type of amp, but I love the tone of little, low powered amps with the guitars plugged straight in. I guess part of why I'm asking is that the Gibson makes the fender sound thin in comparison, and I was wondering if a console grande had a beefy tone like the Es-150. (I know it's apples and oranges, but...)

And, Tom, is there an 8-string steel pickup that's currently being made that's similar to a p90? Thanks for your info!

The Lollar Console Grand reproduction would probably be the closest. I've used a few of them for other builds and is what I'm using for my Shovelhead 8 prototype that I'm finishing up.

Its definitely possible to have a custom 8 string P90 made too. Thats actually a project thats been on my wish list for a while. Maybe for the next Shovelhead 8.

I have an EC-530 and a Stringmaster and, other than both having 8 strings, I can't think of a single similarity in the comparison between the two, much less comparing the sound of a Gibson Spanish guitar to a Fender Hawaiian guitar.

Congrats on the ES-150, BTW. Nice horn.

Thanks! It's kind of cool having different tones going on--my mind was just wandering, as usual! I have noticed that cranking the amp up makes the output differences even out. ( That's where the sweet tones are, anyways!)
