The wound string has a deeper tone. Some people like that, some prefer the brighter sound of a plain string.

The wound string stays in tune better.

The wound requires much more pedal travel than the plain string - some people don't like that.

On some guitars, you can't lower a wound G# to F# because the travel would be more than the changer can bear.

I sold my old guitar a good few years ago.
Having joined the jet age and bought a computer, I discovered the forum and eventually bought it back.
I purchased a set of jagwires and a set of SITs and noticed both had plain 6th stings.
I had never tried a plain before, having always used 22 wound. I put on the 20 plain and being technically useless, I could not get the 1 raise and 2 lowers in tune(surprise, surprise). So I put on a 22 wound, bought from my local music shop along with a 42(G sharp) and 56(E) as I have an extended E9.
That's another thing. Does anyone supply an E9. ext. set of strings? Also, is there a standard tuning for the bottom two strings.
I digress, the 22 now works fine.
Cheers, Arch.

Archie. I'm not sure if they're listed in the "Strings" section here on the Forum, but Bobby Lee offers a special "Steel Guitar Forum" Extended E-9th set. Send him an Email and he'll fix you up with what you need.
