I`m doing research for my friend Vinnie Doyle. He has a DVD of a 1974 Church St. Concert with Gene Watson. He thinks the steel player might be Johnny Cox. Can anyone confirm who might be playing steel? |

Hi Manny:
That is most likely myself on that video from Church St. Station w/ Gene. We did that show about three times over the nearly 10yrs. I worked for him. If I recall correctly, I played a black Emmons "Original" and then a wood-grain JCH on those shows.
The date is probably not 1974 though, more than likely late 70s to mid 80s. Gene's first national hit record was "Love in the Hot Afternoon" which came out in early '75 and was the #2 song of that year. Thus it would more than likely been after '75 for Gene to be on a show of that kind.
Maybe it's some other show that I'm totally unaware of... who knows...???
The good thing for me is that I'm 100 lbs. lighter now than I worked for Gene back then..!!
Anyway, hope this helps and stay well.
Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" Olson |

Hey Tiny, Just want to send a great big congratulations for the 100 lbs. weight loss. I saw you with Gene several times back in the eighty's and the weight never kept you from playing outstanding. Made my hair stand up on my neck being up close to you and watch and hear you play. Awesome!! Thanks, J.R. _________________ NOTHING..Sold it all. J.R. Rose |

Hey Richard: Thanks for your kind words and for posting those videos... I haven't seen those in forever. Brings back some good memories. I remember that I had to use backline amps each time we did that show. Once was a new, Fender SS amp. The other, a brand new Session 500. I remember messing with the knobs a lot trying to get them dialed-in as I was unfamiliar with them and had no time prior to the taping to get used to them. I was using an Evans FET 500 or Session 400 on the road with Gene for the most part back then.
JR: I shed the 100lbs. in the late 80s and have kept them off since. Those Iron Skillet truck stops back when had great food. I made sure we fueled-up at them as I drove the bus a lot. They attributed greatly to my tonnage..!! Thanks for the kind words.
John: I was born in '56 so I was probably 28 or 29 on that show playing the JCH. When we cut "Memories to Burn" in the studio with Gene, I used my Rosewood, '75 D-10 Emmons. We actually did that recording in one take. Pretty cool..!! Thank you for your kind words also.
Another cool little piece of info... that is Tony Booth playing bass on those videos Richard posted. It sure was cool playing for Gene 'cause I got to play behind two of my favorite singers, Gene and Tony. We had our own little package show, built right in. It was great.!
Thanks again folks. I hope you all are well.

The musicians in the Van Buren, Ft Smith, AR area love Tiny Olson and I know for a fact that Tiny remembers us and some friendships still exist. Tiny, you were the friendliest, most approachable big time steel player than ever came thru here and we have not forgotten you and in a recent exchange of emails with you if was remarkable how much you still remember about these guys such as names, what they did, etc. The fact that you are a tremendous steel player goes without saying.

Tiny I can't let this thread go by without telling you how much I admire what you did with Gene Watson. I didn't think I could ever come close to playing the stuff on Memories to burn, but with hours and hours of listening and practicing I think I have it pretty close. So I convinced our band to do it and now it's one or our best numbers. Learning the licks on 'Memories' helped me develop in other areas too, so thank you so much. BTW we caught a Gene Watson show last year and I think he is one of the best artists working. |

Jerry: I always loved coming through the Ft. Smith area for a show. You folks around there were so much fun to be around and just down right good people. How did Tommy Wilson ever make out ?? Thanks so much for your kind words Jerry, your a good'n. Be sure to tell everyone I said hello.
Danny: Sorry to hear (for your sake) that you and I are the same age... ha... ha !! I know, without question, that the job you do playing for Gene is fabulous. I haven't seen Gene and the band since Corky departed but I sure hope that chance comes up sometime soon. It would be so great to visit with you. I have fond memories of your Dad from over 40 yrs. ago as he and I were friends. He sure loved his MSAs.
Hey John: I don't know JL Myers but his name is familiar for sure. I'm sure I ran across him when we taped the shows. We were usually in the midst of several tapings so it was very busy and everyone had to move fast. Thanks John and I hope you're well.
Terry: I deeply appreciate your nice words. Glad that you're playing that song too. I bet you all are nailin' it. It was a great thing to work for Gene. He is such an awesome singer and he used us, his band on his recordings starting in the early '80s. It was an honor to play for him and with the other members of that band. The solo I did on "Memories" was spur-of-the-moment. I remember hearing Joe Eddie Goff playing his piano ride in the phones while we were taping and thinking to myself, I have no idea what I'm going to play and my ride comes up in 5 bars. It just rolled out the way it did and it worked ok. Probably better than anything I would have planned out in advance !! It turned out a good thing that we cut that song in one take.
Thanks to all.

Manny you started a great thread, thanks. Tiny we've known each other for quite a while and I have always known that you are one of the best. I recently (12/30/2015) left Tims band so I could take it easy. We have been in Florida for Feb. & Mar. And I played five or six times down here. So much for slowing down. Maybe we can get together or talk on the phone about the old days. Are you still playing with anyone?

Hey Ben: We sure have known each other for quite some time. Glad you've been doing some gigs after leaving Tim. Wish I'd been down in Fla. You know I'd have been bass-fishing !!!
Drop me a note Ben and we'll get our latest phone #s to each other. I'd really enjoy talking to you too. Please tell Mr. Ed I said hello back.
Thanks my old friend and stay well!!
